I would love to handwrite letters but as my writing is awful and getting worse as I get older no one would be able to read them. I sometimes struggle to read my own shopping list.

That's why I type my shopping lists now.  I could only take a couple times of not being able to tell what an item on the list was!

I use my phone for shopping lists for the same reason!  Also means I can easily add to it when I think of something.
