  • Thanks @EssexHebridean tbh I'm still feeling very under par and am really quite grumpy about it! Hopefully tomorrow will be the day I wake up and the last remnants of feeling grotty from cold will have gone and the period knackeredness will have sorted itself out. I can't bear feeling so unproductive, and like a lump who's barely moved for a week.

Today was another day of trying to rest and read, did some very small work and bits of admin, did the washing up, managed a shower, walked up the road to have dinner with ex husband (who paid, so very mse as well as lovely to catch up), and got a couple of aldo bits while out.

McDonald's Monopoly has finished so I didn't even get any chances to win to reward myself for being out in this torrential rain and wind! But a nice time was had, and I'm determined to feel better tomorrow and get back to my little efforts, which when I'm feeling emotionally down seem a nonsense, and well yes they are in reality, but if you don't keep getting up and trying there's even less chance of good things happening for you aren't there
  • Good morning moneysavers, I woke up far earlier than intended so am not feeling bright eyed or bushy tailed but am determined to drag myself out of this slump so I am braving the grim skies to go and collect some books from Olio. That'll be an hour's round walk and hopefully some books to enjoy and some books to ziffit. I have also requested a winter hat from the same person as I realised I no longer have a very warm one so fingers crossed that'll be suitable. Right, up and at 'em- if I can't feel enthusiastic and energised I'll darn well get back on track through sheer bl**dy-mindedness instead!
  • Your joints and muscles have more up time so they need more down time.
I struggle with the idea of not doing things, it's such a strong narrative. Two things helped that I can remember. One is the song I'm in a hurry (to get things done), lovely dose of country music sense. Two is the book I read years ago about the history of time. We tend to forget that the clock is a human invention that bears no relation to actual human needs.
  • The Olio walk was a success although I hadn't realised how many books there were and that several were chunky hardbacks! My shoulders are very much protesting but I can't say I haven't had a workout 😁
The woman and her dog were lovely, and, while worth is not measured by financial value, I reckon with the hat as well (which is good quality) there's about £300 worth of stuff if bought new so that was especially generous of her. Only two books out of 16 I won't use and they've been accepted by ziffit. The rest have joined my last Olio book pick-up pile of reading material that looks interesting but intimidating and well above my intellectual comfort zone 😂

I'm quite missing scanning the ground for McMo tokens- as Mr PIP and I were paraphrasing the other day, 'we are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the McDonald's Monopoly tokens' (sorry Oscar Wilde)

Entered some competitions, today I'm mostly looking forward to winning a cheese and wine box but I would also be willing to graciously accept the Molton Brown set

Did an actual job for a client

Did some other small bits of work

Wondering if we can possibly justify taking advantage of a promotion for a one night bed and breakfast stay with dinner included for £150. It is a good deal, but that's money that could otherwise go into an essentials pot, especially once we add in train fares and local pub. But then on the other hand, if they do this promotion again next year we'll hopefully be paying towards a mortgage rather than saving in the hope of ever getting a decision. But on the other, other hand then we'll know what our costs are and whether we can afford it whereas we have no idea how much and what for and when we'll need to pay for whatever the next phase of life is. But on the other, other, other hand, we did it last year and my best friend and her husband joined us and it was so lovely to have that time, and to make winter a bit cheerier by embracing the coldness and the bleakness by going to the seaside out of season, and if it's not putting us in debt then maybe we should take advantage of things like this while we're able to. But on the other, other, other, other hand, while I don't want to get bitter about not being able to so easily afford things that others can I also don't want to use 'I deserve it' as an excuse to spend money that is still a large amount of money to me, and to be diverted from getting what I'm most envious of, other people having a home of their own. So I just don't know, and also I've run out of hands 😁

I would go for the mini break for all the reasons you set out.  But I am not the most sensible or responsible person on these boards.  Feel free to ignore and go back to your many other hands for the right answer.

  • PIP - I always encourage people to go when they can. My first trip to England was with the American Association of Retired People (I snuck in). There were about 40 people on the trip - me (about aged 30), 1 single lady who shared a room with me, three couples, and 32 widowers and widows who had planned to make the trip with their spouses, but left it until too late. In between I took a lot of trips, but always for work. I was hoping to travel with my parents - but by the time I stopped working, their health was bad and we only were able to go on a couple of trips together and then they both passed away. And my health is in question now. I sometimes now dream I am still traveling with them. If you can afford the trip and your health is good - take the chance while you can. Given the state of the world, you never know when you won't be able to go.
