I might be wrong but it seems to me that the main reason for the changes is to appeal to the mobile market both current and future.
It would appear that there is commonality of design for both the MSE app and website, for a smartphone and for a desktop and this is not going to meet the characteristics and type of use of either device, hence the problems and usability issues.
Clearly design needs to take account of the strengths and weaknesses of different platforms with appropriate features and different solutions.1 -
Thanks for the MSE official response.
All I can say is that I’m now at the point where the 6 or so forum groups that I used to follow now show as having so many ‘ new ‘ posts that it’s just ridiculous.
Im no techie but it just seems poor not to have the basic option to mark all forums read so how this was missed as a requirement is baffling.
Cheers

I see a "Mark All Read" option in the lower right-hand corner of the notifications bell, and use it often - especially as, when I come to the forum from an e-mail notification, simply reading the relevant thread does not mark it read in the bell! (OK, it still shows a list of topics alleged to have new posts, but since there are no green dots beside them, clearly the system knows that those are porkies; although why it cannot just say "There are no new notifications" I don't know.)

So now we know.
This is a package that has probably been designed / coded for much smaller communities with much lighter use.
It is not suitable for a nationwide forum with thousands of users and thousands of views / posts every hour.
As has been said, MSE staff are reaching the limit of what can be customised within the package. Given that, it is not sustainable to get the supplier to make vast numbers of modifications just for MSE as retro fitting these to the next release would be a nightmare.1 -

Can we demand a refund under the S4D F4RT rule as it's not satisfactory quality, nor fit for purpose?3 -
Jenni_D said:And +1 to the "more than 10 per page" request ... the vast majority of posts are text-only - you do not need massive bandwidth to serve up more posts (text) per page; even up to 50 per page - it's only a few KB. If page loading time is the issue then the problem is either a) the forum template is very poorly coded, and/or b) the forum server bandwidth is limited.

The positive side of this upgrade is that I'm spending a lot less time on this site.
I have all notifications disabled.
I have some boards under 'followed content' and some threads bookmarked.
I look at the bookmarks and followed content and there is a lot less traffic.2 -
Poor layout - not as easy to use as the previous version, and much slower to load each page.1

Maybe it is time to move from Vanilla to to a forum software more designed for heavier traffic by multitudes of members? Those users should all be aware though that such a move can bring it's own issues and disruptions. (And costs, this is MSE after all).It is not something that a forum owner considers lightly. - The old 'better the devil you know' syndrone kicks in.2
