I think having incremental targets for the sabbatical is definitely the way to go. As you reach each milestone you get a sense of achievement and it's easier to celebrate as you go. There's nothing wrong with running a marathon, but sometimes you just need the high of completing a sprint race.
I agree, trying to do 10x the EF target seemed like a bit of a mountain to climb. Have set to £3k and will see what else I can throw at it in the New Year.
I have my EF set at £1K, but will keep going once I get there as the plan is to get it up to £5 or £6K
My EF should be OK at £1k as we have a separate account for house emergencies.

I've been hit by redundancy in the past a fair few times and therefore I want to build 3 months wages in a pot (sabbatical) to keep in case of such unfortunate things happening again. That's the plan anyway!

  • I'm full of cold as well, but mine has come with cough, sore throat, aches from head to toe and fuzzy head. Seems to be a lot of it around. Just done a covid test to be sure and will do another tomorrow. My nephew has just had covid and his only symptoms were a slight cough & cold. Although I think mine is just a fluey thing I picked up from DGS3 on Boxing day. Of course to a 7 year old it was just a little cough, to me its full on virus....lol

  • Hi all, I hope you are doing well as we close 2023. It's been a hell of a year for me not just financially with becoming debt free but we have had some emotional roller-coastering too, and my health issue lingers on with another appointment with the consultant set for mid January.

Today is not a NSD as we are off out tonight for the dinner-dance.  Tomorrow we are both taking part in dry January and we are making more of an effort to go to the gym. For me it will need to be early mornings as I am hopeless on dark evenings for motivation. I think not drinking will have financial and health benefits so a win-win.

I've been sorting out my life admin today, so setting up my budgets and my journal. I will be happy heading into 2024 with a plan and as pen and paper is better than my head-space I thingk it's time well spent!

Today's PAD is £5 to the Sabbatical fund, nothing else happening until tomorrow when we hit a new month.

That's it from me. I hope you all have a great evening, whether you are celebrating the New Year or not :)

  • Happy New Year to you. I read your current diary from cover to cover over Christmas and found it very inspiring. You’ll perhaps recognise me from the PAD thread? I don’t have a diary because my life is pretty mundane and boring. However I love keeping up with fellow MSE folk of like minds.

Thanks for reading @Sallyforth I definitely do recognise you from PADding :)   Thank you so much for taking the time to read through my diary, that definitely takes commitment as now I have cleared my debts I do feel like my updates are lacking somewhat!

You should definitely still consider keeping a diary, mine just keeps me accountable and focused and I wouldn't be without it even if nobody was reading or replying.  Because others CAN read it I feel I need to keep on it, if it was just scribbles in a notebook or my journal I could just leave it because that's just for me.  I hope this makes sense? I do tend to waffle...

  • Happy New Year fellow MSEers! I hope you are all well? The sun is shining here and it's lovely :)

I have made a big PAD this morning as the mortgage has been paid, but I also sent £112.85 to the 1p challenge (4 random months) and £22 for 2 envelopes in the envelope challenge. I have also received just over £15 interest on my savings for last month so I have sent an additional £15 to the sabbatical.

So far I have only spent £50 of my £300 Christmas money (on some new luggage in the sale - so rock n' roll :D )  At the moment I will leave the rest in my spending account just in case I see anything else I want to buy, but it's likely that at least some of it will end up in my savings.

I have been watching Budget with Ira on You Tube to try and get more enthusiastic about savings and I have used some of their 'dice roll' tactics to select random weeks/months for this morning's challenge contributions.  Fortunately we are a board gaming household so I have D8, D12 and D20 dice as well as the standard six-sided ones.

Today will be a NSD for me as we have no plans, it was a late night last night but we had a lovely time and danced the night away.  I was glad I decided to opt for my flat boots rather than heels :D   We will be putting the Christmas decorations away later, but that's a job I don't really look forward to actually 'doing' I just like how clean and tidy it looks after haha.

So, that's pretty much my update. I hope you all have a lovely day ahead.
I'm back to work in the morning and I am planning a 6am gym session so I will be back to the normal hours of updating.
