I wanted to update and reassure some of you that are waiting on your tax refunds. I submitted my tax return on the 6th April, which was a large and atypical amount for me and it was authorised yesterday for repayment. If they did security checks then they were done in the background and they did not phone or send me a letter to confirm my ID. The only letters I got were self assessment calculations confirming the amount of refund due and one correcting an entry error they had made.

After submitting my refund I came here to find out timescales for repayment and found this thread. Reading some of the comments about the pending repayment status persisting over 10 days meaning security checks made it sound onerous and something I should be worried about. As my repayment passed this deadline I initially became worried but when I though rationally about things, rather than unconsciously basing my response on comments here, I realised I should be pleased they have processes in place to double check. I also stopped reading forum comments on the subject as it can be hard to tell who knows the process from those that are speculating and just because it’s the money saving expert forum why should I put more weight in the words written here than on any other website.

Great post - some of the ill informed speculation and baseless assumptions on this thread are not helpful at all.

On the ball this year and submitted my 22/23 return on 14th April. As I made a large contribution to my SIPP immediately following LTA announcement, I'm now owed c £10k in higher rate tax.

For budgeting purposes, I wondered how long it was taking HMRC to process these?

If it was a 21/22 return it was somewhat late !

Assuming you mean an online return and not a paper one then it's automated so usually 2-3 days after submission.

A paper return would probably mean another 6 months.

If it was an online return have you checked your Self Assessment statement of account to see what has happened to the overpayment?

Many thanks, there is £12.5k sitting in my account awaiting my decision!

Need to do security stuff to get it paid. Thank you for the tip.

Also found this thread .. sorry to start a duplicate!

@mutton_geoff We filed early as well. This year my refund came through in 10 calender days, my other half is still waiting for their's 4 weeks on. No idea why the difference. I remember last year mine took a few months to get paid through.

I'm guessing a sample of the refunds get picked up for manual review or something like that which may delay things.

So I was told yesterday that my repayment had gone for security checks. However I spoke with the online people today and they said they can see no evidence of it going for checks as there would be a note on the account and there are none?

Has anyone worked for HMRC and know anything about this? He also said as I’m still in the ten day window it wouldn’t have gone to checks yet anyway. I’m so confused!
Perhaps you need to be a little more patient? You spoke with them yesterday and contacted online today?

HMRC is very stretched at the best of times - repeated contacts only adds to delays.
I’m sorry I fully appreciate this. I just panicked when it said security checks as my wife lost her job recently and we have four kids and have been relying on this payment coming to get the car fixed. Just been a rough few months and I’m quite an anxious person.

I’m just so worried about whether we will be able to get the car fixed and on another forum someone said they had been given wrong info so I thought I would check.

I guess I will know more next week. Thanks for replying.
Any luck this morning? Mine has changed from pending to issued
Nope still pending.  Looks like it’s deffo checks for us.
    It'll be issued this week
Ah I love your confidence but I’m deffo not hopeful!
    Any luck?
    Nope! Sadly not.
