I don’t think the amount matters at all. Every year I receive around £6000 and have never been through any extra checks. It probably is random to a certain point and also if things have changed drastically from previous years. I completed mine on the 6th and was in my bank today
Nothing to do with the amount. When I last worked approximately 9% of tax returns were randomly selected for further scrutiny. Others failed ‘trigger tests’’ and some were further inspected due to complexity. There are no guarantees.

What we’re the security checks they perform?
Some are just address checks, or bank account checks, some check the CIS database to ensure you are in this scheme.
Wonder why they take 6 weeks to complete?

13 years of Conservative government won't be helping!

The sheer volume of returns received in the first three weeks of the tax year? Only January is busier.

Yes fair point. Must have millions to go through and if it’s manually not sure how they do the security checks they won’t get through many per day then. Cross reference details etc?

According to a Public Accounts Committee report, HMRC has reduced customer-facing staff from 25,500 to 19,500 over the past five years as it "moved more customers to digital systems".

Mr Pearce said "they have cut the numbers within HMRC quite drastically in the hope that the implementation of digitalisation would mean they would need fewer staff but the benefits of that have not materialised".

Mine has gone to security checks. Has this happened with anyone else before who might know how long it takes?

Mine did last year, I ended up having to send in ID, prof of companies I worked for, CIS statements and bank statements. I ended up getting money end of July.

If you have not been issued payment within 10 working days they have told me it’s going through security checks, there is standard security checks, additional security checks, TRUCE checks and then after 6 week if still not issued could be looking at compliance checks.
