Dear me Donnie you really are being a bit awkward aren't you? What's your problem? :s

Do you understand that when you go on a website the files are downloaded to your Temp directory?

If so, do you understand that the free version scans files (live) in that temp directory?

And if so then what the heck are you on about! Its a free virus scanner, it scans files on your pc including ones downloaded from wbe pages, and allows you to delete viruses incredibly easy! Yet here you are sounding incredibly angry at me for trying to help rofl!

A lot of teccys use this application for a reason.. stop trying to find holes and just accept others suggestions *sigh*

A lot of teccys(sic) will use a 'paid for' solution, such as Kaspersky/NOD32.

You can bang on as much as you like about Anti Vir, it doesn't scan POP3 mail and doesn't contain Webguard.

If the Free version does as you say, why have they developed Webguard?

Answer that for us, Mr Teccy(sic)?

    LOL! You're getting increasingly funny.

    1) You're completely off track saying a lot of teccys use paid for virus scanners. That is rubbish I'm afraid. Nod32 is a decent scanner yes, but if you compare the amount of Nod users to the amount of teccy anti-vir solution users, the ratio would, i'm SURE, be very wide.

    2) You're right Anti-vir doesn't do POP3. But if you save your attachment to hard disk first before you open it, it gets scanned anyway. Equally if you use something like gmail (which again, a lot of teccys use) and don't use the pop3 ability but the web interface, then a paid for one would make no difference anyway :)

    3) Webguard is a different thing from what I'm talking about and you seem to be mis-understanding how Anti-vir can still protect you from malicious sites. Right now on your pc, you have pictures of Martin lewis wearing a funny xmas hat :) Its on the web server, and when you typed it in, it got downloaded to your pc, which now loads that image instead of directly from the web server... right? Now if it had a virus, Anti-Vir would detect an image which is a virus and pop up allowing you to safely get rid of it.

So its not actively looking at your websites, but it is protection you from malicious content that would be given to you through the website. Webguard is a similar but different solution. Of course there must be extra reasons why to go for the paid for version, but webguard on its own isn't one of them.

If we did a poll asking who uses what anti virus on something like devhardware, I would guarantee that free virus scanners are in the majority. And why? Because they work, they do a good job, they protect you, and so why spend money? After all, especially on this site we're money SAVING experts.. not "lets spend money on things we can get for free" experts.

I owuld suggegst the reason they have developed WebGuard is to try and convince people they need to upgrade to a paid for version.

Aslo POP3 scanning is not that useful, most (possibly all) ISPs scan emails for viruses and spam anyway.

Blimey!, speaking as an oldie now. Not for one minute do I understand much of what has been written, however, what I do know and I don't wish this to seem patronising, but it is really refreshing to read the spoken word as it is was intended by a 20yr old.

Being of the old school, I cringe when I read/hear poor grammar/punctuation/pronunciation etc. . The one thing I notice more than ever, is people's inability to recognise the word nothing and replace it with nothink. This can be heard by almost anyone on the television.

Yes, I know I've digressed. The excuse I'll use that it was me who started the thread.

  • Thank you islandman :) I think that was a compliment anyway! In which case hurrah!

I feel to be credible in giving technical advice the least I could do is try and speak in correct (or mostly correct) english...

I mean no one is going to trust somebody who says:
"use tis scanner its da bollox"

    ...are they?

I feel the same way. Even when I'm texting someone I still use full sentences, grammar, punctuation and I avoid contractions and "text speak" like the plague. It annoys me when people do that especially when there is no excuse nowadays (predictive text etc).

  • Donnie, as long as you understand that the forum is light hearted, and we're suggesting good money saving methods. I'm sorry you've had a bad experience, but try to be unbiased in your comments which other people (not so technical) may use :)

You're right. If they need POP3 and web filtering software, Anti-Vir is not the right solution. Though my Grandma got a new pc recently, and the first thing I did was ensure Anti-Vir was on it as even she can use it without any problems.

    :)

I'm glad that I'm providing some amusement.

You appear to have jumped to the conclusion that I have something against Avira's AntiVir.

    I simply stated the facts.
If the OP(or anyone) feels that they don't need POP3 scanning or a http filter, they are away.

If they do feel that they need them, it's not the right solution.
    Not everyone is a teccy(sic). Techie? ;)
  • Odd... you originally had that posted before my reply.

Turns out that now, my reply is higher than your post..

    How confusing.

    :)

Bad experience?? I'm sitting on a beach in Thailand, with the sea a few metres away.

I have access to paid for solutions if necessary. So it doesn't affect me either way.

Your advice is not bad, I just added more info; which in turn led you to post more and..... the result? More info for the masses. ;)

    No negative feeling at all.

I wouldn't necessarily trust a novice to save attachments and scan them before viewing. :)

Did it again. I like to confuse you 'teccys'(sic)
