  • Hi there, serial lurker here. I have only posted once or twice on this thread but I never fail to go to it as soon as I log on to see what nuggets of wisdom have been added everyday.

I am trying really hard to adopt the wonderful ethos of simplification that you are all sharing on here.

Some days I find it really hard to shrug off my usual "stress-head" and I find if I look on here, see some of the wonderful quotes and words of peace and wisdom, and I can actually FEEL myself relaxing a little and find it much easier to take a step back and look at things more calmly.

    thank you all so much.

....whew....and thank goodness for the people replying on my thread ...and generally for the Old Style Board ethos of being friendly and helpful to each other.

Saying this - because I am just feeling a bit shocked at having a thread of mine removed from another Board by someone who frequents that one. I wont take it personally - as I have read other posts by them - but I dont think I'll venture onto other Boards again for a while (if ever) - the atmosphere can get so critical sometimes (...and as for the Arms......!!)....and I was trying to help.

Oh well....such is life.....my thought for the day is what a learning experience about life (as well as finances) this website is.

Yes I find the greenfingered moneysaving and in my home ~DIY sections are just fine but other than that.......... I realise this is only my opinion and others are welcome to disagree. This is only my past experiences.

thank goodness for Old Style Board! :D

Just to add something to the simplifying thread: If you go to charity shops, which is the best kept secret in England in my opinion, then please donate as much as you buy! Its the Yin / Yang of charity shop buying.

I've only ventured away from this board on a few occasions, and I've found exactly the same thing, ceridwen.

I was appalled recently at some of the stuff that got posted on 'mumoftwins' thread on DFW (enough to make you not want to share anything in there).

Though I did enjoy the Christmas/Special Occasions Thread in the build-up to Christmas, and I've had some good things from the Freebies board.

It's a bit like playing in your own back-garden and occasionally venturing into a neighbours garden - but NOT wanting to go into the next street because you don't know the kids there :rotfl: .

Yep....I read a bit of the Mum of Twins thread. Saw the type of comments you refer to - though actually that thread had mild bad comment stuff compared to some....and there were loads of really generous/supportive comments (which I'm sure were very heartening).

Long-time lurker here (mainly hang around this board collecting recipes!) but I've been following this thread for ages. We downsized and simplified our lives last year when my husband, after months of health problems, was offered a good redundancy package. We were thinking about moving house, upgrading cars etc at the time but instead we decided quality of life was more important. We stayed put in our current house and got rid of one of the cars and the change in our lives is unbelievable! My husband still takes temp and freelance work , but leaving behind years of long hours and work stress means he's like a different person. Our two DDs are so much happier because we have loads more time for them, even though we have loads less money!

My theory - as said before on the threads - is that where the posters are mainly women the feeling and atmosphere is kind and supportive. On the few occasions I've seen disagreement the result is quickly that the parties themselves agree to disagree and be nice to each other or someone else steps in to be the peacemaker.

Over on the discussion threads, money related threads, though not so much the dfw's, where there are lots of men being manly the whole feeling can be aggresive and sometimes threatening.

There is/was one poster who'se name I can't remember, he had at the bottom of his posts that he was a financial adviser. However, his number of - often unfriendly - posts was about 15,000! When did he have time to advise?

    Hi all

I posted earlier on this thread about passing on some of my more sentimental pieces of jewellry that I no longer wear to some of my closest friends and their daughters so thought I would let you know the response I got from the first one.

This was quite a wrench for me to do as I was posting a 21st birthday charm on a chain all the way to New Zealand(so was petrified that it would get lost!)Now it's a long time since I was 21 so have had many years of "attachment" to said necklace but obviously can't wear it anymore!

Anyway had a lovely email from NZ which said that they were thrilled with the necklace and what a lovely idea they thought it was( the passing on was explained in the card that I sent). She said that it had made her cry and that she will pass it on to her daughters(when and if she has any).

Just sitting here typing this I have a tear in my eye-it has got to be the most satisfying present I have ever given anyone!

very excited now as another friend's daughter is 18 soon and am going to give her a set of pearls that I got when I was 18-hope I get the same reaction as it has warmed the cockles of my heart!

Aril, thank you for that quote, its beautiful. I’m going to work it into a scrapbook page for my dgd somehow. I have a few quotes that are relevant to kids including the ‘Listen to the Shouldn’ts, child …’

Ceridwen, sorry you’ve had a bad experience. I was shocked at the ‘violence’ of some of the posters especially when I first ventured into the arms. I kept wondering how these people reacted with others IRL but I rarely venture outside OS now. I noticed a few people started coming into OS and posting wind-ups but luckily they seem to have been discouraged by the general disinterest in their antics. OS is quite honestly one of the friendliest boards I’ve ever found.

This has become such a great thread, and far more wide reaching than anyone could have imagined when it started, so thanks Ceridwen for starting us off.

Its good to see some newbies joining us, :hello: to anyone who’s come out of lurkdom!

, your post made me cry. Its lovely that your necklace will be handed down.

I havent actually got rid of any clutter this week, but have agreed to pass a couple of pieces of furniture to someone as soon as they have room for it, hopefully in a matter of weeks, so more carpet will appear soon!

Have a good day everyone ;)
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

Know what you mean about other boards. I often have a quick look just to see if there's anything of interest -sometimes there is, sometimes not. I do enjoy the 'special occassions' board. I love the idea of creating things and the people there have been more than helpful - as they are on this one.

Well, my plans went out of the window today - rain stopped play (plus gale force winds !) I was going to run down town and grab some bits from the charity shop that I know I should have got yesterday, plus something from woollworths but it wasn't worth getting blown to bits and wet through for. Nothing that won't wait.
Our lad and his girlfriend spent most of the morning having a blazing row so I sat and made a load of cards for a card making group I belong to.......in between being referee..................lol They've calmed down now thank goodness.
Charity bag due for collection tomorrow and so far not much in it so really must make an effort this afternoon and fill it up.
Making my cards brought to light the fact I have far too much stuff and it needs thinning out a bit so I'll make a package up and send it to the care home Mums in so they can use them for the card making acitivity there.

Feel a bit guilty that I've not stuck to me de-cluttering plan but if I'm not in the right frame of mind when I start the wrong things will get chucked and the rubbish kept.................lol
