Pleasantly surprised by the negative rates tomorrow considering how energy prices have been this week

Yes. I was nearly tempted to charge the car up a bit today, although the price was just above my normal 9p limit. Glad I held off. Doesn't look, from the forecast, that I'll be losing too much by switching off the solar.

I previously came to the (simple) conclusion that in general Agile was only attractive for EV users and/or others that could switch a large proportion of their consumption to the early morning hours, and definitely avoid the evening (4 - 7 pm?) peak period. Is that still true as a generalisation now?

Often the cheapest rates are available in the early afternoon. There have been multiple weekends recently with cheap and negative pricing all day. Some days are fairly flat and similar to SVT, but the cheaper days make up for it when they come around.
I switched to Agile from my fix earlier this month and have so far made a few quid in savings, even as a low user. I don't know if I'll get the benefit year round, but will probably stick around until late autumn at least.
Early indications are that this coming weekend will be another cheap one.
You have Octopus Compare, Sam, so what is that telling you?

It seems like you've been saying this for ever and people tell each time that it's not true. I don't have an EV or solar so am one of the 'and/or others'. I don't do anything in the early hours except sleep and I don't particularly avoid the evening peak and yet my last bill says my average cost was 14.22 pence per kWh. So it seems to work for me.

Put like that it surprises me since our consumption patterns aren't that different.
With Oct Compare I have some doubt: With the shorter and medium term time scales Agile would be better for me (quite consistently) than my 14 month fix. However this would be reversed for the year's view, again consistently.  I find it puzzling that this contradiction applies whenever I run the app.

You are putting too much faith on apps and historical prices. What has gone before on agile or fixes cannot be extrapolated to the future. Basically the best strategy is to make a decision based on your gut feelings and your feelings of risk, of course there are risks with any strategy.
Basically make your decision run with it and see how it pans out, you can always change your mind after all , unless you get tied to an exit fee strategy, AFAIK you are a low user and therefore exit fees are going to affect your decision. Stop trying to analyse the what ifs every day, get another hobby.

There is no requirement to remain on Agile for all 12 months of the year. While you might have to settle for a slightly inferior fix in the future, the savings made over the summer months will likely more than compensate for the difference. I might even consider Tracker to get me through the coldest months once I am eligible again in October.

It's as Martin frequently says about fixing - if you want certainty, a fix is right for you even though it may cost you most in the longer term. Even though ideally we should all be striving to save money where we can, that doesn't mean pushing ourselves outside of our comfort zones to the point where it causes anxiety. Ultimately Sam, if your fix is a price you are happy with, then stick with it, there's no shame in that, and a tariff like Agile most certainly isn't going to be right for everyone!
