Depends how you look at it.MeteredOut said:
I know this is MSE, but do people really delay their dishwasher going on for days to save pennies?Newbie_John said:Yeah, I'm glad the cheap hours are after 10am, that gives me an opportunity to see if it may be worth waiting with let's say dishwasher to overnight Th/Fr for possible negative price. But 1.68p is already so low..
I do delay mine to the overnight IOG 7.5p rate to save about 20p (a standard eco wash uses just over 1kWh), and this will reduce to nearer 16p after July, but I don't think I could leave it like that for a few days.
Tumble driers, I can understand.
I have solar thermal - so in days like these I have "too much" free hot water so tend to wash dishes by hand in summer. So I can kind of schedule it by washing less, and negative prices work as incentive to do so.0 -
When it's low like 1-2p we will run a legionella cycle and if there isn't enough for a load of washing or dishwasher put those on a hot clean cycle to disinfect them
Will charge up the two power stations as well.
Not sure we will put the oven on as the kitchen is already 26oC and I tend to cook outside this time of year.0 -
Depends on the exact pricing and my dishwashing demand at any given time, but as a single person household where the dishwasher runs 1-2 times a week it absolutely makes sense to delay a day or two when particularly low prices are forecast.MeteredOut said:

Tumble driers, I can understand. Then again I also collect the cooled water runoff from the hot pipes each morning before a shower to flush the toilet with, and that saves less than 2p a go. The minor but regular penny savings across each utility bill certainly do add up to a small but worthwhile number of pounds each month in my experience, but naturally won’t be practical for everyone.
In any case, the Guy Lipman site predicts a potentially quite huge negative price spike in the early hours tomorrow morning so I’ll definitely be postponing until the octo-rates come out this afternoon. I’m curious what other sources people prefer for their Agile forecast rates if there’s any other good tools out there?Moo…0 -
For next day, published at 10am (divide roughly the UK prices there in EUR by 8):In any case, the Guy Lipman site predicts a potentially quite huge negative price spike in the early hours tomorrow morning so I’ll definitely be postponing until the octo-rates come out this afternoon. For long term:
https://emoncms.org/ukgrid
The smaller the gap between demand and supply the lower the rate - works fine up to 5 days ahead. When the supply exceeds demand (like tomorrow 5am) negatives are likely - although the Nordpool website indicates closer to +4p/kWh and lowest 12:00-13:00 maybe -1p/kWh.
Th & Fr really good
Sat & Sun average
Mon & Tue good
Anyway, as long as exact values remain mystery till 4pm, this gives a good idea to see what's going in the next few days.2 -
No negative pricing overnight in my region, but tomorrow we do have negative pricing from 14:30-15:30, 1-2p overnight and less than 1p for most of the day up until 4pm.I am a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Benefits & tax credits, Heat pumps and Green & Ethical MoneySaving forums.
