Brazil nuts in shells - almost unobtainable this year. So far I've tried, Aldi, an independent supermarket, Sainsbury's and Waitrose. I suspect they are nudging shoppers towards ready shelled nuts but they are expensive and lack the flavour.

I struggled to find flank mutton for ages.

Mum used to make lentil soup with it for the family when we were growing up. It was a weekly treat.
The butchers she used eventually stopped stocking it and as she got older, she found it harder to make.

She passed away last Christmas and I desperately searched for flank mutton calling into any butchers whenever I passed. No such luck. Until the other week. I spotted it in an independant butchers at a nearby market. I think he had it labelled wrong? 'Breast of Lamb' - I'm not sure, but when I double checked with him, he confirmed it was flank mutton.

Anyway, finding it made my day and I rushed home to try to make my version of Mum's soup. It wasn't as nice as I remember, but then I'm not my Mum :) May I show you the photos? One is of the acual meat, the other, my finished soup...

I must say it looks delicious!
Very often with soup the leftovers taste even better than when you first made it. That’s whether it’s been in the fridge or even if it’s been in the freezer for a while.
Hope there were leftovers, @rancid-a 😊

Thank you @Brie :)@Teapot55. You are so right! Mum used to say this too - the soup always tasted better on the second or third day day.  No worries, SIX bowls put in the freezer plus the same amount of meat wrapped up and frozen too.

  • Soup looks fantastic !

I am having trouble finding organic celery at the moment. Husband suggested non-organic but I don't fancy ingesting 67 pesticides. (Data from Environmental Working Group).

Ox kidney sometimes available at waitrose.  And remarkably cheap.  Otherwise we go for lamb kidneys - more common and often seen at tesco.
