Kippers are smoked herrings. I get Young's brand with butter, from Iceland.

I used to buy rollmop herrings a lot, but won't now, even from Totally Swedish, ScandiKitchen or Europa Food. They all seem to contain rapeseed oil and preservatives now. I have switched to Latvian sprats and Icelandic cod liver 😊
They are talking about fresh herrings, which are available.

When we were primary school age, the bro and moi often stayed with our grandparents at their draughty, cold, Victorian four storey house in London. Grandma would make us Ovaltine to have in bed.

Haven't seen it in years, but admit that I haven't looked for it either. Now that we have been able to narrow husband's NCGS down to wheat, we are able to reintroduce food with rye, oats and barley. Ovaltine has barley. I don't remember it having cocoa though.

Ovaltine Original 300g 3.50 with Nectar card at Sainsbury's to 12/12/23

Ryvita, which my mother practically lived on, with cottage cheese, to my surprise, is still going. Some of the variants are wheat free. Husband delighted, as he gets a bit of crunch and something spreadable. Generally, Morrisons seem to be cheapest and has a bigger range of them.

Anyone seen Arctic roll ? I tried Iceland and Sainsbury's but they don't have any.

Your classic slimming food from the 1970s! Cardboardy as indigestible, you'd start with good intentions but I challenge anyone to have ever finished a pack rather than letting them go stale, no matter how many "interesting" toppings were found.

I think it's like so many good for you slimming things that the toppings have too many calories.  We didn't have Ryvita but my mom's go to for slimming was cottage cheese.  And she always bought the type that had pineapple in it.

Rice cakes have taken over quite a bit from Ryvita these days but even they now come with sweet coatings, dipped in chocolate etc.

Well, we’ve had quite a job tracking down sponge fingers - we will be making a proper homemade trifle for Christmas Day.

Eventually have found some in one of our larger local Co-op shops.

None in local Tesco/ Asda superstores or Lidl or Aldi.

(Glad we found some within a shortish walking distance otherwise it’d have been a bus-ride or even next time we were going out of town in the car).

    would've . . . could've . . . should've . . .

We were also looking for plain swiss roll but haven’t found any yet - this would have been an alternative to sponge fingers for our Christmas trifle - my mum always put jam swiss roll in the bottom of her trifles - the ones with just jam in them and no cream.

Didn’t even find them in the Co-op where we found the sponge fingers. Going to keep looking 😊

I think Morrisons do both of those products
