A pub near me has a steak and wine deal, with a £2 surcharge to swap the meat for a vegan cauliflower 'steak'. That's a large slice of grilled cauliflower, for anyone unaware. In no way does that cost more than steak.

Can't comment on the ingredient cost for the American milkshake place, but it seems very odd they don't do a vegan oreo shake!

I expect it's because they have to keep separate pans, utensils, and oil for cooking it, plus procedures/training/oversight and legalities.
It's no different to dealing with an allergy, restaurants already have different coloured boards, pan handles and knifes for this stuff (at least the ones I worked in did!), and it doesn't take much training to know vegan = no animal products - any new menu item in places I worked had a spec sheet/recipe written up and the cooks just follow that anyway. I think the vast difference in cost between a steak (~£5) and a cauliflower (~£1) should be more than enough to cover any extra hassle without a surcharge.

What really gets me is why a large tea is more expensive than a small one? Oh yes please I really want to pay an extra 30p for some extra hot water!

Another one, you check in at your hotel (early) - to be told you’re in luck, your room is ready!! Great stuff! Then you are told it is an extra £30 to check in, Nah, I will wait the one hour thanks!

Do you have a kettle that boils twice the amount of water for nothing?

Agree about the early check in thing though!
The additional 'cost' would be a fraction of a penny.

I don't know if you would class this as a "ridiculous add-on" but I really resent having to pay a booking fee (Theatre or cinema) when I've booked online & (in many cases) had to print tickets using my paper & ink. It's particularly galling when there would have been no booking fee had I been able to get to the Box Office in person & there was face-to-face service involved & an actual ticket!
I can top this. Went to the Drill in Lincoln the other night and got charged a "booking fee" of £1 per ticket even though I was paying in person at the venue. Yes I did argue the toss and no they would not remove the "booking fee".
