It is very hard. This is why I can’t bring myself to replace my car with my car fund. I need an emergency back up fund first! I think this is the struggle of most of us who are unused to savings. Spending a loan is somehow so much easier (and why they need to be avoided). Your bathroom will be so lovely though and you’ll save again.

I sympathise on not liking emptying your EF. Good the restructure is delayed.

I had a big anxiety attack last night about not having any savings again.  I have reminded myself that we're not in the same position as before, and can actually access credit now if we need to, so it's not the end of the world.  Plus, I know I can add a little bit to savings each month so it will build up again.  I haven't slept well at all over the last few nights, so feel rubbish today.
I can understand your anxiety about having no savings but think about your PADs and your ability to rebuild savings. It will be worth it in the end and you will have built up savings in no time.

I have a similar anxiety as I won't have a safety net if I do get my house but I will rebuild too
Thank you.  It's very stressful isn't it, but we will both get there again, and at least we've both dipped into our savings for positive reasons which will benefit us - more so in your case!

It's really hard emptying those pots, even if they are there for that reason!  Thank you :)

Thank you.  It will hopefully bring us lots of joy!

  • I too get very possessive of savings but don’t regret a penny spent on a new bathroom 2 years ago.  It helped to look at it as increasing the value of an asset.

It is ALWAYS anxiety inducing spending big chunks of money on things, even when those things are necessary and saved for. Remember how far you've come in this wonderful MSE world we all inhabit though. No consumer debt AND in a position where you are paying up front for GETTING THE BATHROOM DONE for goodness sake! I've said it before - when we've spent so long making adjustments to get debt free. mortgage free or whatever, and then building up savings, to see the account balances no longer reflecting that is a massive jolt. Just think though - it won't be that long before you will be able to go and look at your lovely "savings" in the shape of that bathroom!
