You can check the version of your Xbox using the instructions here: http://www.xbox-scene.com/versions.php

Any hard drive installed has to be lockable, otherwise it won't work. The locking has to be done before the drive is inserted into the Xbox. Compatible drives are listed here: http://xboxdrives.x-pec.com/?p=list

That's good news! Picked up a second-hand, barely-used XBox on EBay for £14, Splinter Cell from Amazon Marketplace £2 and a 300GB Maxtor HD for £28. With the help of the good people on this forum we should soon (hopefully) have a fab media centre for less than £50. :D

    I love MSE!!!!! :happyhear

@rubiales, having splinter cell is not enough, you need a way to copy the linux game saves from your pc to your memory card (you need one of these too!).

IMHO, this is the trickiest bit - my advice is to buy a memory card with the game saves on. PM me for more help / info :-)

Is that correct?? I thought that unlocked drives worked, the only caveat was that if it wasn't locked Microsoft would detect it and ban you from Xbox Live if you went on it. But I'm confused now.

Secondly, is there any easy guide to replacing a HDD that someone can recommend. I have seen numerous guides, and some are quite dated and conflicting.

the hard drive needs to be locked to boot the xbox bios/dash
with a softmod you must have the hard drive locked as you need the M$ files to boot
unlocked hard drive means no softmod and no boot
this doesnt apply for chipped xbox's

My son has successfully softmodded the Xbox. Thanks so much to all on this forum for your help. :T

All we need to do now is install the new, bigger HD. I checked out compatibility issues using links and it appears to be OK (hopefully). It is a 300GB Maxtor DiamondMax 10 SATA.

I have found a link with a tutorial here:

    http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/203286

However, it is dated 2005 so not sure if this is still the method to use.

Would be grateful if you have any advice to give, please.

    Thanks in advance

cant give much advice on the procedure anyway
i just upload the EEPROM of the softmod box
flash it to a chipped box then set up the new hard drive on there
    then reverse

    Oh no! :(

    Checked the link here:

    http://xboxdrives.x-pec.com/?p=list&v_brand=&v_modelnum=diamond&v_size=&v_rpm=&v_buffersize=&v_locking=&v_version=&v_postedby=

Drive is on there as OK. The name of this drive is only available as SATA as far as I can see from Googling the name and spec of the drive.

Is there a difference between Serial ATA and ATA? (Sorry if that question makes me sound like a Numpty!!)
