They used to say butter so it'd form a fatty layer to keep the air out and keep it clean, but I thought the wisdom had changed on that...? Aren't we meant to run it under cold water to get the heat out of it now?
On the same tack about being wary of 'helpful hints' in older books, I have somewhere a book called Fortunes in Formulae that if I remember correctly suggests a lotion containing hydrochloric acid to reduce freckles!!!
As a freckled red-head, I gave that one a wide berth but I've always remembered it. 🤣Aiming for a Champagne Lifestyle on a Lemonade Budget

According to the BBC.....
As for butter, save that for your bread, unless you find yourself in one very specific situation. If you have the misfortune to get hot tar on your skin, a fatty substance like butter can help to remove it, reducing the pain and making it easier for doctors to assess the severity of the burn.

As for odd medical recommendations.....and excuse me for making you visualise....I once read something where someone was looking for a remedy for getting pimples on her labia majora and the medico who responded in the article started waffling about the benefits of sunshine on the prevention of minor skin infections and that's one reason many people should get a tan or even a very minor sunburn. Ever since I've wondered if the woman in question was going out on sunny days, and doing headstands and the splits.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe, Old Style Money Saving and Pensions boards. Wow, you have all done brilliantly ! Seems like Yorkshire is the chazza find place. Husband went to a conference there and picked up an amazing pair of Ermenegildo Zegna merino wool trousers for under £107

A visit to my local Oxfam on the hunt for a calendar, instead found a fantastic scandi style cardi for niece, jools top for me (and another) for £12. A visit last week to a susan ryder near work got a book on self-sufficiency for £5. I have an allotment and learned loads already. It's good for the soul to walk with your soles on the soil.7

I wandered into a charity shop yesterday and found their sales have started! Two packs of Christmas cards for £1.50 each, and two books, also £1.50 each. Then it went through the till at £4.98 and she said an additional discount had been applied.
Worth having a look now if you still have cards to write or are buying in advance for next year, and worth it too for Christmassy ornaments as these seem to be on sale prices too.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)
