£300 top up for winter fuel allowance.

Options
 Morning all

I qualified for my State Pension in January 2021 and first received the £200 winter fuel allowance on 12th November 2021. This year, as folks will be aware, there's a £300 energy support payment on top of the standard £200 WFA for qualifying pensioners and pensioner households, from 17th November onwards. Early days I know, but has anyone had this top up yet?

From memory of reading the government guidance the qualifying period runs till the end of December so it could be paid any time between now and January, but it would be very handy to have that money in my greasy mitt as soon as possible

  • I haven't and don't know anyone who has. It's discouraging to think we may have to wait until Christmas when lots of pensioners are struggling with increased household costs and now increasingly higher food bills. If the government thought benefit claimants were due a payment already, why not pensioners?

  • Not had any money, but I have had an email from EDF, my supplier, saying that they have been notified by DWP that I qualify for the £150 Warm Home Discount. They say I should receive a letter from DWP to confirm, but nothing yet.

  • In my opinion it is reasonable that the £500 Winter Fuel Allowance should be paid when the gas and electric bills are due for payment. My DD comes out on the 21st of each month. So the big bill (22/11 - 21/12 isn't due for payment until the 21st December. Whatever is left over can be used to cover the 22/12 - 21/1 bill on the 21st January.2023

The government won't have that information at all.

Most payments are made automatically in November or December.

Based on observations from the past few years of relatives who have received the Winter Fuel payment I'd estimate that it could be paid at any point in the next 4 weeks starting from today (Monday 21 November), so at any point in the period 21/11/22 to 16/12/22.
  • I haven't heard of anyone getting it yet
Last year got mine 12th November

I wonder if the Cost Of Living payments which have just been made to people in receipt of means tested DWP benefits might have slowed things down a bit. With 8 million+ CoL payments and 11m+ WFP, paying them all at the same time might cause some disruption.
