Fixed price tariff

I am I am with EDF and a year ago I was on a standard variable rate and was paying £134 a month (I have a 3 bed home). My bille went up to £313 earlier in the year and in July due to advice I signed up to a two year fixed tariff. This didn’t come into effect then and it was only yesterday (17th Nov) that I was informed by EDF that my tariff had started, was backdated to July; meaning a £560 underpayment and my direct debits would be £580 a month. My usage (gas and electric) is average and the £2500 average amount that households are supposed to be paying is way off this. Are other people being charged the same? Would it be better for me to change providers? Thanks

    Welcome to the forum.
What is your fixed-rate tariff called, and what are the rates?
How much electricity and gas do you typically use in a year? (There will be an Estimated Annual Consumption shown on your bill, if you don't have independent records of your own.)

Every time I do a search to switch providers I'm informed there isn't any so good luck
  • Welcome to the forum.

How did you apparently sign up for a tariff that "didn't come into effect then"?  When do you think it was supposed to come into effect?

What rates are you paying now?  What rates were on the fix that you signed up for?

You say your usage is "average".  What is your actual (not estimated) annual usage in kWh for each fuel?
  • I am in a  Fix Total Service Jul24v6 (E7). I pay 43.77 day, 15.68 night, 38.99 daily standard rate for electric and 10.309 gas with 27.22 daily standard rate.

  • I signed up in July for fixed rate but as I says my direct debit stayed the same and it wasn’t until yesterday that I received an email with the new bill. I thought that perhaps I haven’t applied for the fix properly and so it wasn’t actioned ! I was obviously mistaken

Your direct debit payment is not your bill.

You were put onto a fixed tariff at the time that you asked to be put on one.

The price of the fixed tariff was changed according to the October EPG cap price on 1 Oct.

You are paying the same price as everyone else (actually slightly less because your standing charge is slightly lower).

The only way you could get any significant saving is if you looked for an E7 contract with another supplier.  That could have different day/night split so, based on your actual usage, it might be cheaper overall.  This, however, would lose any protection that you have by being on a fixed tariff when the price cap changes.
  • What do you mean my direct debit isn’t my bill ? My direct debit is £580 from end of December. I am sorry but I find this confusing which is why I was asking for advice. Thanks

Think of your account with EdF like a bank account.

Your direct debit is you putting money into that account.  This doesn't change from month to month as you use more or less.

The bill is them taking money out of that account.  This does change from month to month as you use more or less.

What they are saying is roughly "if you don't put in £580 per month, we will be taking out more than you are putting in and you will end up in debt".

Well you have day & night electricity rates. So you have something that can be approximated to an E7 electricity tariff.

Your bills are based on estimated readings and maybe way out.  Go read your Gas and Electric meters now and post back your readings.
