All I know is, if you use quite a bit of electricity in the 4 hours before the session starts you seem to get a fairly high reward (more back than you've spent in the 4 hours) but whether that last hour counts or not, I couldn't work it out. I found this out by accidently using a lot during the run up to the 1st Session.

I thought it was the 3 hours prior to the hour before the saving session starts. I.e today.

    Saving Session = 17:30 - 18:30
    3 Hour 'in day' window = 13:30 - 16:30

I've just cooked tonight's chicken in the oven as we can eat it cold later. Now I'm putting the dishwasher on, then at 17:30 I'll make sure all the house lights are off.
That's what the document says, but there was the strange wording from Octopus that [Deleted_User] mentioned - "data from right up until the session begins" - which is intriguing.
It's just the easiest way for them to explain. I wouldn't read anything into it

I've used the washing machine and had a late lunch using the oven. And had several hot drinks. Will get another one in before half four. I'm also charging my ipad ready for the switch off. I don't earn much but do my best.

It's noticeable that the savvy Octopus customers have upped their use in the hours pre-session to try and gain extra reward, yet the thread for Eon customers has no mention of it.

    Should we tell them?

Lol it's a good jub us eon customers can't read this thread. I used quite a lot of power between 13:30 and 14:30. The biggest issue with these suggestions like most things is it will make it on to Martin's mailing list and then the algorithm will get changed. Or someone will ring them and ask if it's OK to do it.

150Wh used in the last hour. Got all the cooking done before the session, but both the fridge and weather compensated boiler decided they had to do their thing during the slot, pushing up the total a bit.

  • I so turned everything on 13:30 to 16:30, charged batteries, cooked chicken in electric aga, 3kw heater on, tumbled dried some stuff and put dishwasher on, then did 90deg hygiene wash on washer, OMG must have consumed 18kwh over the three hour period.  Lets see how that works out.

Good Luck! I'll check on Bright app tomorrow how much I used 1.30-4.30, I'm guessing around 4-5kWh.

    Edit - Actual use 1.30-4.30 was 7.26kWh

I would think that Octopus will be noticing the changes in consumption themselves - eg customers charging EVs during the day and will tweak the algorithms. Currently seems that the more sophisticated your energy demand ,the more money you can potentially make. (Reminds me ,must change the timer on the heating for the 50m pool !!)

You could say that "the more engaged you are with the system and the more willing/able you are to change your behaviour", the more money you can potentially make.  Which isn't a bad thing in my opinion.

It is a National Grid algorithm. Octopus themselves get paid on the same basis so in a sense it doesn't matter to them if people are load shifting.
I'm sure that the National Grid will be aware as part of the trial, but realistically the numbers who know how to take advantage of the adjustment and are able to make big changes is going to be small, so I'm not convinced there will be a change during this winter.
