HB, why don't you consider getting a cleaner in on a temp basis, once every week to help you, until you are recovered, they could do the heavy stuff, ie hoovering, beds, laundry, etc leaving you to potter at stuff you can easily reach.OH followed to local garage, his car is being servicedCats sortedKitchen sortedMince out defrosting for chilli tonightFire doneShopping list made by OH, will go and get it on the way back from poppies.Have a good dayBreast Cancer Now 100 miles October 2022 100 / 100miles

Morning all. Hope you're all ok today.
DGD2 slept from 7.30 until 7am this morning and she's asleep again now. I was going to take her to toddler group but have come home after dog walk and will flutter a little until she wakes up.

A quick tip for anyone like me who finds it hard to carry heavy things up- and downstairs with both hands:
I have a laundry box in my bedroom, and used to bring up a plastic crate, fill it with the to-be-washed clothes, then carry it back down to the WM. I felt really unsafe on the stairs, having to use both hands to carry whilst needing to have at least one hand free to hold the grab rail. (Sometimes I wish for octopus arms!)
My solution was to keep a pillowcase in the bottom of the empty laundry box, aim to throw the dirty clothes in there, and then on laundry day just grab the pillowcase full of clothes, which is really easy to carry in one hand, and also - if the worst should happen - soft to cushion a fall.

Afternoon all, sorry for the late entry, been sick over the weekend. Just about on the mend & catching up on the thread.
Pigpen, what about karate or judo for Dot? I've heard good things about marshall arts instilling self control and discipline in kids.
I'm away at this invert show on Friday, not looking forward to the 5+ hour drive to Brighton. I was aiming to be there for 5pm when my dad finishes work, but I think hitting Brighton as the friday working week is kicking out will be a bad idea. So I'm leaving a couple of hours early and will just sit in my car or a cafe with a book until he's done.
Before I leave I need to:
Instruct bf on the animal care over the weekend (he's not fed the baby scorps or the axolotl yet)
Clear some shelves for the pre-organised and potential new arrivals
Shift some enclosures around so I have space for the big custom enclosure I'm collecting
Pot up the 4 scorplings I'm taking to sell into secure travel pots
Tidy away the temp tortoise hibernation winddown enclosure (hes now in the fridge)Debt Free as of 17/01/2009 Turtle Power!!

Thank you for the suggestion Kaz, which I hadn't really considered. I'd love to have a cleaner and Belovéd would totally support that but the last time we tried we used an agency, and the person who they sent was wonderful for the first few weeks and then wasn't. There was a huge amount of angst in her personal life and I just felt overwhelmed by it all. I really tried to help her and made quite a few phone calls to people who might have been in a position but to no avail. (Plus which I found her wiping the loo seat with a wet wipe which she flushed. Not okay with that.) Things looked better once she'd gone but they actually weren't. Once I've got the house back to looking like an acceptable standard, and it now just needs a dust from top to bottom, I'll be able to keep on top of it, I think.I've had three months to think a lot of things through and I don't want to go back to living the way I was. Flying little and often before it gets grim as opposed to waiting for it to look as though it needs to be done and then procrastinating has been my method for years and it doesn't work for me because it's always hanging over me. This way I can just accept it has to be done and do some every day or so which I always meant to but never actually did. I'm also decluttering here and there as I totter about - did the front section of the cutlery drawer this morning, and there's already a pile to go to the CS from my office. There will be more. I'm not up to Ionafan's book decluttering speed yet but I soon will be. I can't wait.I've got to go out tonight so I'm taking it easier today. I will make some chicken liver paté (freezer decluttering) have a bath and then do some work on my computer. I will do a bit of that dusting as well, because I now want the house to be clean enough to make the effort. I'm not sure I've felt this way before.Better is good enough.8

ionafan - do you have a spycam in my house? I used to keep the laundry hamper on the landing, and was afraid that one day I would fall when bringing it downstairs. So, last week, I decided to stand it at the bottom of the stairs, but this is not working at all. 'Hall' is a square between the bottom of the stairs and the front door, and there really isn't room there.
I'm going to adopt your tip. Thank you ❤

No spycam, round! Glad to have been of help. I don't know why I didn't think of this years ago. I was going to buy one of these collapsible laundry baskets but (a) didn't want to get rid of the neat wooden "treasure chest" and (b) every penny is being saved where possible. Then I remembered that I have some thin polyester fleece under-pillowcases (made for people with allergies) which I had considered sending to the CS but kept, and realised that they are ideal. Problem solved!
Sewing took a nose-dive as I felt the start of a migraine. An hour's doze under a blanket has helped a bit, but in the meantime my 3 loads of washing, all carefully hung out on the whirly, have had an extra rinse - and it looks as if Rosie and I will get wet when we go out for a quick walk as soon as I've posted this. DH is pleased that he doesn't have to walk to the bus stop.
Catch up later x
Yep, here comes the rain again...

HB.. Maybe try asking somewhere like AgeUK about their recommended cleaners? They do all the back ground checks and DBS checks etc so you don't have to do that and if the person isn't a good fit for your househld you can request someone else.
Raphael.. She has autism so dislikes contact so she can't cope with that. I think she would actually love volunteering to pet animals at the local shelter so after Christmas when the ballet thing is a thing of the past we will look into that.
