The Sony Play Station 5 (PS5) games consul has a claimed power consumption of 0.3W when switched off.   As I have gone around individually measuring power consumption of every item in the house with a calibrated meter the shocker was the latest Play Station from Sony.   When left off the power consumption was 32.2 watts per hour or put another way it was drawing 140 milliamperes.   In rest mode it was drawing 375 milliamperes.
Thinking it was faulty I went around to my next door neighbours and tested their PS5.  It was also drawing 32.2 Watts per hour.
So if you are the owner of a PS5 and want to reduce your electric bill by £8 a month then just unplug it.

if its anything like the xbox then there are different types of 'stand by modes' depending on how quickly you want it to wake up and if you want it to be able to update and download games while 'asleep'. my 10 year old could find and turn of those settings in no time at all but it would have taken me hours so maybe find a child or a guide online :D

It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?

  • You mean they draw 32.2 W or 32.2 Wh per hour or 0.7728 kWh per day.  The calculations of running cost look about right if your measurements were correct, it's just your units that are wrong.

I have tested mine in the past and they do not draw anything like that amount over an extended period. For the first 1/2/4 hours (depending on settings) they power the USB ports to allow the user to charge the controller, once that period has ended they drop. If you keep Wifi and active wake/background download then they use more, generally around 12-14 watts seems to be where mine settles down to if not downloading, higher if downloading. If you turn off Wifi and controller charging they drop to the specified 0.3w level.
  • This might be off topic. But when i turn my PS5 on it takes a good 4-5mins before i can play a game. But if i turn on my Xbox X it takes around 30 seconds. I have been a PS gamer all my life so i was shocked when i got the Xbox in the summer just how fast it is tbh!

    It was drawing 140 milliamperes.
    Calculation.   140 milliamperes / 1000 x 230 = 32.2W confirmed by using an on-line calculator

772.8 watts per day or 282Kw per year.
282Kw per year at  34.05p per Kw = £96 per year

Do you have an energy saver setting on? My PS5 starts, and loads games, just as quickly as the X, so I'm surprised to hear that!

It depends what you mean by off/standby. From standby the PS5 takes 10-15 seconds which is comparable to the Series X, from a cold boot/off the PS5 normally takes about a minute, the Series X seems to take about 45 seconds.

I would suggest you might need to do a storage rebuild on your PS5 if it is taking 4-5 minutes as that does not chime as accurate either with my personal experience, or the hundreds of reviews of the console.
  • @GingerTim @MattMattMattUK Thanks guys. I turn the PS5 and Xbox off by the power button on the front, but do not unplug. Could this be why one is so fast and the other so slow?

So why are PS5's drawing so much power when off when the claim is 0.3W?   Some sort of firmware upgrade has left parts of the PS5 permanently switch on when it appears to be off?

this says 140 milliamperes is 0.14 watts? (but my little bear brain is not good at maths)
