  • Hi everyone.

Sorry for going AWOL. I have not been in a good headspace, and then I caught some flu like covid thing, that wasn't testing as covid, but definitely felt like it, so I have had a week off work, and I'm still trying to get my head in gear to make sure that I am not going to get pulled up on my performance at work again.

RE: The dog. I am heartbroken. I literally don't know how this is possible. I'm really really stuck between a rock and a hard place now. Whatever we do is cruel. I was under the impression that if I hired a secure dog walking field, I would be able to let him off lead so he could run around and play fetch once a week, and burn some energy off but that is no longer an option. I can walk him muzzled. People already cross the road when I take him out. He will never be able to socialise. To sniff the ground without a muzzle in the way. To go on holiday with us, to go camping with us, to go on adventures in the campervan. He will be tied to the house for ten years, growing more and more frustrated, unable to understand what he has done wrong. And a frustrated dog is a dog that snaps. My daughter will miss out by default, as the first consideration will always become "What about the dog?". My stepson may not be allowed to stay with us, as his mother becomes paranoid about the 'dangerous dog' that we have. My daughter's father will use the ban to report us to the dog warden, over and over again.
And on the other hand, I put my baby to sleep, and lose my best friend and live with that guilt. For the rest of my life.

Please help me feel better about having to make the hardest decision of my life.

  • Delurking as one who had to say goodbye to an albeit elderly dog earlier this year.  For us, the decision was based on their quality of life.  I still grieve for her but know that I couldn’t have given her a poorer existence.  She had always been such a star.

  • I do feel for you as I know just how awful it is to lose a dog - I have been through this 5 times & it never gets any easier. However, my dogs were at the end of their life & although it was very upsetting, I knew I had no option but to let them go.
If you have a large garden, are you allowed to let him run free there? Have you contacted anyone for official advice, or are you just going on what has been in the news?
I am so sorry - nothing I can say to make things better. It's a decision you will have to make, but don't rush into it until you know that you have no option. KA
  • Oh Fox,  I can hear your anguish.  My only comment is to do what is right for your dog. When I have had to make these decisions it has been all about their quality of life.  If you make the decision based on their best interests then you are not being cruel, you are doing what is best for them.
    Sending hugs  x
