Have been lurking for a while (and felt sad enough at the thought you might return the coat when it seemed needed and the only kind of luxury you had.) I almost don’t want to open the thread for the thought that this poor dog might have to die because of these people. That’s not meant as a criticism of you if you ultimately have to make that decision but I am furious as a dog person and can’t even begin to imagine what it must feel like to be in your shoes. XL Bullies are not my type of dog but the government are absolutely lacking in common sense to think that they can tar them all with the same brush. In fact the way they decided to offer money to people who have them euthanised will likely remove the ones that would present a problem - because it would take someone who didn’t really care about their dogs to make the decision on that basis.

You’ve already lost one dog in the last few months and for your daughter’s father, knowing that, to behave in that way makes him sound like an absolute *insert multiple swear words here.* He didn’t bother with your daughter over the summer, picking her up like a toy and he thinks he effectively has the right to harass you? Grrr. Surely there’ll become a point where he won’t be taken seriously/will get himself in trouble for making spurious allegations. I would get the registration started as soon as possible (and neutering if he isn’t already.) That way if there are delays in processing at the government end, it’s not something he’ll be able to exploit.

Is your daughter able to understand what’s going on? I grew up with dogs and we didn’t have holidays because my parents thought it wasn’t fair to have dogs and then leave them in kennels. If I’d been told that we could have holidays if the dogs went, I’d have wanted to keep the dogs. Plenty of time for holidays in the future when you’ll also have the debt cleared and have been able to save for a guilt free holiday.

As well as the guilt, I worry that letting the him go would only lead to resentment toward the other parents (the children would pick up on that) and even the government every time they take tax from you. Taxpayers have to pay to keep murderers and others proven to be dangerous alive, yet the government would happily see animals who have done nothing wrong condemned to death. There is rightly an outrage if a group of people are singled out simply because some with those attributes are a problem.

I hope there will be some kind of challenge to this - limiting the times/areas that they can be let off lead seems much fairer (even if still muzzled) and I would support it in a second.

I hope some of this is helpful and apologise if reading it makes you feel worse. It is not my intention at all; you seem a lovely person and don’t deserve this.

Just a note on your dog situation, my understanding of the rules is that you can hire a private secure field for exercise. It says the dogs must be muzzled and on a lead in public. The dogs trust are running free online muzzle training and have a lot of information. I'm sure they could help with a clear understanding of the rules.

I agree its not fair to tar all dogs with the same brush and a dog left with no exercise is not a happy dog.

  • We have put the dog to sleep. I am so so sad. I sat with him on the floor of the vets, and cuddled him and told him I loved him as he fell asleep. It was the best decision, for him and his quality of life. I am glad it was peaceful. I don't really know what else to say about that.

In other news... we got a pay rise at work.
It equates to an extra £90 a month, roughly, after deductions, and they've backdated us to April of this year. My payslip this month shows initial earnings of £3,100, but I have lost £950 to deductions. Eek. I have no savings left, only the 2k in my premium bonds, which will be paying for the kitchen fitter to do the extra work that needs doing (separate electrics wiring into the kitchen instead of sparring off my office, building out a cupboard under the stairs, installing the gas oven). That's going to be about £1500. And then I have to get a dining table, remove the wallpaper off the ceiling in the dining room, repaint, hang different curtains, for whatever is left. And pay for Christmas. So the extra £700 this month is very helpful, if not as much as I was hoping for.

We still haven't turned the heating on. It is getting cold in the house. I am wearing fleece lined leggings, two pairs of socks and have a hot water bottle tucked into my waistband at pretty much all times. We are spending a lot of time in bed with the electric blanket on. At least that is costing me about 50p a day, whereas I read the other day that keeping your heating on is about £13 a day.

I have another review at work next week. I'm trying my best, but my head has not been in the game last week so I feel like I'm playing catch up and its making me panicky.

Have you talked to work about what is going on? You’ve just lost two dogs within four months of each other, and the only consolation you have is that Little Dog had a good long life. Nobody’s head would be in the game; dogs become a part of the family in a way that only people who have pets can understand.

Having nothing in reserve feels very risky pending a review. What happened to the van/car funds? I think anything that hasn’t been done yet needs to wait for another time - clearly the oven fitting is a priority as it would be a safety issue and illegal if not done properly.

I am so sorry that you had to put your dog to sleep. I shed a tear as I read your message as I have been there with several of my much loved dogs, albeit when they were ill & at the end of their life. So much more heartbreaking when it has to happen to a young & healthy much loved pet. As you say, he would have had no quality of life if you hadn't made the decision that you did.

Well done on the pay rise, especially backdated, but not nice losing almost one third in deductions!

I hope your work review goes well. If they are aware of everything that is going on in your life, hopefully they will be supportive and understanding. KA

I am sorry that you had to make a decision about your dog, but think you were right when you say it was the best option for him.  It doesn't make it any easier though so sending hugs your way.

Please let work know about all of the things going on in your life, the dogs, the house move etc so they can be supportive.  They are not excuses but big factors in why your mind may not always be on the job fully.  Great news on the pay increase even if that means more deductions.  They may even have a counselling service in their list of perks / benefits that they offer - I know ours does.  Might help to talk some things through.

With the house, start putting money aside for the next project and while you and OH are saving you can plan.  That is what I have needed to do over the past few years.

Keep going and keep updating so that we can support and you can keep on track :)

I’m so so sorry about your dog, I laid on the floor with mine when he went to sleep, all he knew was I was giving him a cuddle so I like to think he passed smiling and wagging his tail.  ((Hugs))

eek, to not having much money left ! Has your other half done anything about bringing the money (or even claiming benefits) ? How does he think Xmas will happen ?
