That moment you regret stopping your Birmingham midshires direct debits because you've not qualified for a switch in so long as you've done them all.

    Then it all changes.

Having to set up new direct debits now :(

This present Nationwide switch offer is so tempting that I may not be able to resist switching any longer! High time to open my very first donor current account, I think! Has anyone tried to open a second HSBC current account for this purpose and is this actually possible with HSBC (as long as you don't tell them exactly why you are opening it, obviously) if anybody knows, please?
Many banks will indeed ask why you are opening an account with them (surely just for their own statistics rather than something that factors into their acceptance decision). But "donor account" isn't one of those options so you should be fine :)

HSBC will allow you to open a second current account but will also run a hard credit check, which you can avoid by opening a Monzo or Starling account instead (or one with Lloyds/Halifax/BOS if you are already a customer).

I've just attempted this switch twice online and both times was kicked out at the end with a 'technical issues' error. Waste of time. Anyone tried it and been successful?

"This offer is only valid on the first sole current account and first joint current account you have switched to us since 18 August 2021".

We did sole a/c switches last August into new sole FlexAccounts so are looking to benefit from a switch into our old joint Flexaccount.

I believe previous offers had the qualifications for a joint a/c switch bonus met by switching a sole a/c into a Nationwide joint account but this time it appears that the a/c being switched must be a joint one. Am I understanding this correctly?

We've a spare donor sole a/c with 2 x DDs but no other joint a/cs (Santander joint was switched to Nationwide joint last September but no 3rd bonus received). Looks like I'd need to set up a new donor joint a/c elsewhere and set up DDs (I only closed the Birmingham Midshires a/cs a couple of days ago).

  • Thanks for the information. Very tempted, after just receiving the £160 from Santander, to switch that account. B)
Just wondering how long did you have to wait for your money from Santander as we also switched an account  to them. TIA

Sorry, late reply. Switched 12th Aug., £160 credited 27th Sept.
Looks as though they are not utilising the full 90 days period.

    Hi Clive
AYK 'Needing to be a joint' is the meaning of the words in the terms.

And anyone else's switching experience may not help, borne out by the fact that I did get 3 incentives in the September '21 offer.

IMO would be best to open a(nother) joint to switch to be reasonably certain.

Think Santander (cheeky) can be done by phone, while, if not changed, LBG needs a branch visit.

Well done on getting 3x incentives last time.

New Santander joint a/c has been set up online and 3 x utility DDs moved to it. Easy to do as Santander login still valid so could see new a/c was fully operational straight away.

DDs pay out on 25th so could apply for Nationwide switch now with switch date after 25th but I'll probably wait until I see the DDs set up on the Santander a/c.

@trient Thank you very much for this response! It's potentially very helpful!

i ve just switched my account ok .
Just one snag when they failed to match the driving licence with my photo. not surprising as its a very old photo on the driving licence.
This delayed the switch by 3 days. I expect i may have to go into my local branch to prove my identity  which is no problem

I’ve only just set up DDs on the account that I want to switch to Nationwide, with first payments due to go out on 15th and 27th of Oct.

If I apply to open Nationwide account today, can I put a switch date in the future (e.g. 28th Oct) to make sure the DDs are active before the switch? Had anybody done that, what’s the latest date you can put down for the switch?
