Power Cuts in 2022 would be a disaster, its not 1970 anymore

Firstly, lots of business require servers and computers to run 24/7 running everything from Machines, ERP systems to VOIP phone systems, rebooting these even after a controlled shutdown can often take time, shutting them down unexpectedly can cause damage as a UPS will only hold the systems up for minutes not hours.

Businesses will need time to plan for these outages, generally that would mean bringing in generators, usually diesel and that won't sit well with the Environmentalists, neither will the Mumsnet massive be happy, if the 50KVA Diesel generator starts up and rattles away at the lock up unit across the road or the corner shop next door when they are trying to get their kids to sleep.

Thousands of people now receive care in their own homes, such as Oxygen systems which require power. Most have some kind of battery back up, but again those are not designed to run the system continuously for hours every single night for weeks on end, worn batteries would put people at risk. So those people being cared for at home, would then need to occupy a bed in a Hospital, during a seasonal peak demand for beds,

Todays society is also completely different than in 1970 too, if I had a generator or power bank I don't think i'd want to be the only house in my Street with the lights on. That would make it a target for every spicehead and scrote roaming the darkness looking for a mark. I'm not scaremongering, just making a calculated assessment of risk based on the fact old people on mobility scooters and kids are being attacked in broad daylight on our streets. Any Government giving a daily timed cloak of darkness for criminals (and people turning to crime through desperation) to operate behind would be extremely foolhardy.

Oh then of course there are the inevitable plague of house alarms which sound incessantly every time we get a power cut. I imagine most housing estates have at least one of those, and they are more annoying than barking dogs. Imagine that, for hours every single Evening.

I also have no idea how certain age groups will manage without social media to constantly ask for advice on every decision or problem. Within 30 seconds of a platform going down, sites like down detector light up like a pin ball machine with "OMG"'s and "!!!!!!". Parted from their precious social media due to lack of Wifi or a flat mobile phone, thousands of people in society will freeze, crash and stop operating!!!!.

A lot of businesses won't be affected that much as the "blackouts" are expected to be later in the evening when most are closed. Most plans seem to suggest the blackouts will be rolling, different areas at different times, usually starting at around 3pm and ending around 11pm with each area without power for maybe 2-4 hours during that period so they will be very limited. Even the worst predictions don't say the blackouts will be long term, many experts are suggesting just a few days or a couple of weeks maximum so  most really non-essential businesses would just close for those hours rather than investing in independent power.
