It sounds more like a battery issue than a "diesel" issue.

However, am I right in thinking that diesels are heavier to "turn over" from cold (compared to a petrol) and so the battery needs more "juice" to do the job?

I know my last car (2.0TD) began to struggle to start after my work moved nearer to home and my journeys got shorter.

In the depths of winter, is an 8 mile journey sufficient to fully charge a battery if you've also got lights/wipers/heated rear screen etc going?
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)

OP, you won't be saving much on diesel over petrol if you are driving an extra 3,000 miles per year just to 'take the car 8 miles round the block'. I think you've been sold a pup.

I also work from home, so won't even be using it on a day to day basis and will have to take it for a run round the block every night.

Eh?? It's not a dog that has to go walkies every night.
If I don't take it out at least once a day for an 8 mile round the block it will break down, especially with it being diesel and the colder weather coming. A man from the AA advised me of that the last time I owned a similar car.
    AA talking bulls**t again
During Covid I was shielding. My diesel vehicle sat for a month at a time without moving and has had no I'll effects
In my last diesel if I left it alone for one day it wouldn't start. I expect to be the same in this one. AA advised you must drive it everyday especially in cold weather. £200 a year membership so I expect they know what they're talking about.
This is complete nonsense. If it wouldn't start if left a day then that is most likely down to a failing battery.

"The engine size is also too big (1.6 litres)"
I'm almost 100% certain that a 2007 Yaris and other years has a 1.4 litre D4D Diesel engine.

If you do an Autotrader search on that year and fuel, then all that comes up is a 1.4D, so I think you are correct. It must be immaculate to sell for £4K though.

  • OP I have to ask.....why on earth you bought it

    Nowhere to park it
    Cost of fuel too high
Work from home so wont use it....Diesel as well
Moving into new flat at same time

Didn't you consider any of the above before purchase

Sorry guys, just checked and engine capacity is 1364cc, so it's a 1.4 litres engine.

Definitely diesel and cost £4k though. Is there a chance I've been ripped off?

Plenty going for £2.5k and lower on Autotrader. Ripped off is subjective, trader prices it high on the assumption that prospective buyers will realise it is stickered at a high price, and then haggle. You needed to have done some research before buying.

    I never think to haggle.

Rang dealer today they're refusing to refund.

Really? I see 7 diesels nationally from 2.5k up to 4K.
