If I don't take it out at least once a day for an 8 mile round the block it will break down, especially with it being diesel and the colder weather coming. A man from the AA advised me of that the last time I owned a similar car.chrisw said:DanS1 said:I also work from home, so won't even be using it on a day to day basis and will have to take it for a run round the block every night.Eh?? It's not a dog that has to go walkies every night.
During Covid I was shielding. My diesel vehicle sat for a month at a time without moving and has had no I'll effects0 -

I would have thought not using a diesel at all, is much better for it than "going round the block" everyday, from a DPF perspective.
Would a car that old even have a DPF??How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 3.24% of current retirement "pot" (as at end December 2025)1 -
It is 8 miles to go 'round the block'?

In my last diesel if I left it alone for one day it wouldn't start. I expect to be the same in this one. AA advised you must drive it everyday especially in cold weather. £200 a year membership so I expect they know what they're talking about.unforeseen said:

Ok not quite round the block. I will just drive 4 miles one way (trying to include 40mph roads if possible) then drive the opposite way back. Problem is I don't finish work until 5:30pm so will more than likely be driving in the dark, thus affecting my black box insurance scores.sheramber said:It is 8 miles to go 'round the block'?0 -
Not even in the top 10, death of spouse, parents, children etc trump buying a car.DanS1 said:Moving house and buying a car are the 2 most stressful events in life, both of which I've now gone through in the last month.0 -
The AA man's advice was complete rubbish. He may well have been pulling your leg.DanS1 said:

Anyway, if you really want bad advice you can get it on the internet for free.1 -
£200 is for breakdown cover not for advice about driving a diesel car.
Our diesel could sometimes sit for a week not being used.
But then it would be driven about 40 miles- we lived in a rural area and shopped in town once a week.
Didn't have any problems with it.1 -
Starting a diesel car and running around the block is a good way to run down the battery, the battery power needed to turn over the engine will take more than a quick run round to recover.1
