I have both fuels with EDF but as separate accounts and received constant  smart emails/texts since joining. I went into both accounts and ticked no smart meter and both stopped coming. I have had one email in the last 2 months asking if i had changed my mind and to untick them.  I pay whole month DD so that might be a factor.

The communications hub normally sits atop the Electricity meter as it needs an electrical supply to function.

I don't know how often they do this, but there's also the option of fitting a standalone comms hub to serve the gas meter if the electricity meter isn't a smart one.

I've finally received an email telling me that I've opted out of Smart Meter Communications.  Hopefully this is the end of it.  I'm not going to let them close the complaint yet though as I received the email asking me to rebook after I had checked that I was opted out of communications and after they had told me verbally that I was.  I'll be interested to see if it has really worked.

As a side note, at the bottom of the opted out email they had "Zero Hassle" Rated Great on Trustpilot.  What a load of .....

@Ignite To them you're the "hassle" by refusing a smart meter that would make their billing easier and more accurate.

As I've said before, I'm not saying that I don't want a smart meter, it's that I don't want the arrogance of EDF presuming that they can just book an appointment at a time of their convenience.  I'll have the install done at a time of my choosing on their install booking system, not at a time they pluck out of thin air.

Now it they were to pay for my time off work, that would be a different matter.

The way to stop them harassing is not to give your phone no. EON wouldn't stop texting me about smart meters,   despite my opt out,   changed my no to 07777777777,   no more texts.

I've been getting regular emails and texts about the smart meter situation but again, we're a SOLR customer for gas only, and our current electric meter is non-mart. I'm reluctant to get the electric meter changed to smart until I'm back on a big 5 supplier (due to the risk of being SOLR'd to British Gas if my current one should go under) and so it goes on. I've just not engaged though - just ignored everything.
Smart meters are supplier agnostic. Suppliers do not fit their own meters: they select meters; IHDs from an DCC approved list of certified devices. On a change of supplier, the new supplier takes over the responsibility for the meters.
Yes, but to make a gas Smart meter (ie - from EDF, who are the ones under discussion here) worthwhile, we'd also need to change our electric meter to smart. As I am currently with a non big-5 supplier, so have the potential risk of a SOLR transfer should they go under - and there is always the risk that any such SOLR transfer could be to British Gas, who cannot support E7 on smart meters currently, you avoid any risk of this like the plague. This subject has been very well documented on here, and at the last count it seemed that BG had offered no solution to those affected. Allowing that neither of our meters are ancient, and both appear to be functioning perfectly normally, it's just not a risk I'm looking to take any time soon. (Thanks for mansplaining smart meters to me though...

Wonder if you might share your source for "mandatory"?

Can't seem to locate any form of legislation which requires a consumer to have a smart meter unless it is a replacement or installation in new build property.

... which is why i wrote mandatory, not compulsory or obligatory or any other word.
Ofgem have mandated that the suppliers achieve 100% roll-out of smart meters by the end of 2025. Thos is discussed at the link I provided.
It doesn't need legislation. If Ofgem require it of the suppliers, the suppliers will do it (or pay the penalties of they don't).
