Actually, it shouldn't count as 'opened' or 'closed'. The virgin money terms specifically say 'closed', so maybe focus on that. I.e. they never 'closed' account - it was cancelled within cooling off period
  • Has anyone signed up for this whilst 25% off supermarket shops is active? Still waiting for the switch but curious to know more details, for example if it works for online shopping and the full list of stores.

I presume it'll be based on the MCC used by the merchant. Unless there's something in the terms which limits you to only physical supermarkets you'll be fine.

So long as it's genuine spend at a forecourt or supermarket I imagine you'd have to trouble arguing your case in a complaint if the incentive itself does not pay as expected.

I agree - that makes sense. But when I asked, they said they'd deem it an ' opened and then closed' account - not a 'never existed' account.

Depends on who you ask I reckon. Most frontline staff are not well versed on borderline cases (only know the answers to generic questions).

If you ask to speak to a supervisor or manager, then you may receive a different answer.

For example, almost every time I've contacted support at a bank or financial institute, to cancel a recurring payment (also called a Continuous Payment Authority (CPA) ), support have replied saying I need to contact the business. Then I have to reply and tell them the FCA rules about this. i.e. customer can cancel by contacting the business or the bank or financial institute (or do both). I usually do both and insist that the bank or financial institute cancel it at their end.

Usually, at this point they budge and cancel it, if not (if I'm phoning) at this point I ask to speak to a supervisor and then after speaking to them, it gets done.

When I called Virgin money the other day, I asked one of the borderline cases, like, can I open a joint account now and qualify, if I have held a sole account before. She had to call or message a colleague to confirm. In this case as I had held an account I wouldn't qualify even through a joint account.

Canceling within the cooling-off period shouldn't count as a opened and closed account. Ask to speak to senior staff, if that doesn't sway, approach the ombudsman. It'd be interesting to see how it plays out.

I opened my first account before there were any incentives so I am excluded from any switching offers.

As usual loyalty counts for nothing. I could switch away and see if there are any future offers to switch back, but knowing my luck that could be years away.

  • Thankfully mine was opened straight away when I applied.  I almost switched so many times previously, thinking they'd never offer anything other than their wine/gift points.

My switch completed this week.  I still haven't received any email confirming the offer is active like I was told I would, but when I clicked on the Cashback tab in the app yesterday, the 25% offer showed up there, saying "58 days left".  Spent about £40 on it yesterday, so just waiting to see if it shows up in the Future Cashback section before going on a spending spree...

hi, so the 25% offer appeared within a couple of days of the switch being complete? definitely not before? please update as to the timescale for the cashback to be credited. thank you.

Yes, the number of days remaining suggests it was activated the same day the switch completed.  I checked on the day of the switch, but must've only done so before the switch actually completed, i.e. funds didn't transfer from old account until the afternoon (as is often the case in my experience).  I can't recall if I checked later that day, but 2 days later I checked again and it said 58 days remaining.

Still no pending cashback but the purchases have a little clock icon as though they're still waiting to clear, so I'll check again tomorrow for an update.
  • Still waiting on mine, switched on the 2nd.

Curious if Ocado and what convenience stores are on there, hopefully there will be a full list, at the moment it's pretty shoddy with telling you what is eligable.
