Okay so have gone with GE UK, just hope we can switch to either the price cap or a competitive fixed rate with another energy company next year!
Depending on how far ahead their power purchase agreements go, GE might have a competitive fix next year too. (Probably not, but you won't know until you get there.)

Why is GE UK not in the news for their lower than normal tarrif?
I expect its because they dont offer a SVR (ie at the price cap) which means at the end of the fix you either need to switch to another energy firm or agree to a new fix which could be expensive compared to the price cap at the time?

There is also the issue that they only participate in the Warm Home Discount scheme for Core Group 1 (people receiving the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit).

Passing up a potential £150 for those who may qualify needs to be factored in to people's consideration - but given the fix currently on offer vs dire predictions for the cap, it's probably virtually irrelevant now.

Now I've got 13 days left to decide whether it's better to fix for 2 years at a slightly higher rate instead.
Have you considered Utility Warehouse (UW)? That seems to be the only available other option, at slightly more than Green Energy but with other benefits. I see UW as more obviously stable than Green Energy (GE), if only because I don't know much about GE - but they're more expensive, and you need to take two other things from UW to get the right discount.

That's my dilemma for the next 14 days - UW or GE (or anything else that crops up in the time period!)
UW are a horrible company with terrible customer services and use an MLM model, dependant on you taking their other overpriced services. UW broadband can be had about half price elsewhere for example. Well known for overcharging people and only reason they have positive reviews is because the reps are also customers so flood trustpilot etc
Well put. In addition to this, they are also somewhat shady when it comes to dealing with people's money, they are seemingly unable to marry up an additional payment made to a customer's account with that account (choosing instead to leave it "hidden" from the customer and only acknowledge it exists if that customer actively pursues them about it), and worse perhaps, unable to manage any other form of credit onto the accounts without offsetting it against the following month's Direct Debit. So far my experience of the latter is that a £25 goodwill credit added to the account then reduced the planned DD for the next month by £25 - but I cannot see the same thing applying later in the year when the government grants start landing, too. Add to the mix the fact that they "charge" vat on the payments you make to them, rather than on the energy you purchase - a ludicrously opaque way of making sure that customer accounts and any credit due back to a customer on leaving are ridiculously hard to keep track of - and all in all, I would never again touch them even with the longest barge-pole in the world, whilst wearing full protective gear and several pairs of thick gauntlets...

Happy Utility Warehouse customer? Abso-flipping-lutely not. I'd suggest that the only ones that are are either those earning well from hooking others into the net by means of the MLM scheme, or those who are new enough to the company that they have not yet had to make any contact with the so called "Customer service" department.

For the avoidance of doubt, I would strongly recommend against ANYONE switching to UW.

Made my transfer request this morning and received the confirmation email detailing the lower tariffs... close call!
  • I was wondering if it's risky to take this kind of tarrif if you expect to have to switch after the deal ends.....switching opportunities are very limited in the current climate. I suspect I am just going to be hammered by Eon Next on the SVT for electric :'(

Yes, most threads regarding GreenEnergyUK had the warning that you might be stuck with them and a not cap regulated SVT after the fixed tariff ends and no supplier will accept you.
