The SMMT April registrations were released today and EVs clocked up more registrations than I had been expecting with only 3 or 4 days to go. PHEVs had avery strong showing as well Sadly I don’t seem to be able to find the breakdown by manufacturer that SMMT used to release.

I had suspected that PSA group dealers were pre-registering cars given the sudden surge at the end of this month and last, so I had a quick look on Autotrader and saw of the 829 used Corsa  Electrics for sale 322 (38.8%) were 2025 cars with less than 100 miles. As a comparison there were 3817 used ICE Corsas (post 2020 when the electric Corsa came out) of which 481 (12.6%) were 2025 cars with less than 100 miles. The comparative figures for the Mokka electric were 233  (27.3%) 2025/100 mile cars out of 855 in total. The figures for ICE Mokkas were 398 26.3% out of 1510 post 2021 cars, so quite similar suggesting the electric Mokka is selling as well as the ICE version. Looking at VW there are 42 (4.3%) used 2025/100 mile iD3s listed out of 972 post 2020cars. Of the 3540 post 2020 Golfs listed 133 (3.8%) are 2025/100 miles.

For the next paragraph I will refer to 2025 cars listed on Autotrader with less than 100 miles on the clock as “pre-reg” as I believe that is what they are.

Interestingly we can see from SMMT statistics that 12348 Golfs have been registered YTD so “pre- reg” cars currently listed on Autotrader represent  1% of YTD registrations. If we look at the EU-EVs website we see 6086 iD3s have been registered YTD so the 42 “pre-reg “ cars listed on Autotrader is relatively low at 0.7%.

6338 Mokka electrics have been registered so the 398 “pre-reg” cars currently on Autotrader represent 6.3% of YTD registrations. 4195 electric Corsas have been registered YTD so the 322 “pre-reg” cars represent 7.7%of registrations. 13852 Corsas in total have been registered according to SMMT YTD so assuming this includes the electric Corsas then there have been 9657 ICE Corsa registrations so the “pre-reg” figure for ICE cars is 5.0%.

With any manufacturer, more cars may have been pre registered and sold or may have been pre registered and are sitting in a compound somewhere. It is not intended as an absolute % of 2025 vehicles pre-registered,  just a basis for comparison.

If I had a bit more time I would do figures for other manufacturers as it does seem there is quite a difference in policy between VW and Vauxhall. This might  mean VW can sell their cars without pre-registering large numbers or it might mean the majority of VW sales are going to fleets - we can only speculate. So draw whatever conclusions you wish from these figures.

I think some of your stats include Brand New cars advertised on Autotrader that have yet to be registered.

You are quite right. The figures for Corsa Electric should be 235 pre reg of 718 listed so 32.7%. The corresponding figures for the ICE Corsa were 415 of 3732 so 11.1%. The figures for the Mokka Electric are 177 of 787 (22.5%) and ICE version 318 of 1987 (16%). I am time constrained at the moment so will get round to the others later.

I was confused / surprised today on the motorway to see a Range Rover Evoque displaying a number plate with the green stripe down the left hand side.  It is my understanding that the green stripe is only permitted on fully electric vehicles.  It is also my understanding that the nearest available RR Evoque is a plug in hybrid.  My quick online search seems to have confirmed my understanding in both cases.  Is there something I am not understanding correctly?

BEV Range Rovers have been seen, with camouflage on, on the M40. That was a month or two ago, so they may be out in the wild, now?

Long shot, but I was surprised last year to see a green stripe on a car I didn't think came as a BEV. Managed to catch up, and could see the exhaust pipes, then realised it was an all green Welsh flag. That's to say it is all green, with a smaller Welsh flag on it, and/or WAL, WALES, CYM or CYMRU. Certainly caught me out. More common to have green base, white top, and the dragon in the middle.

Ah, good call. I now remember being confused by the Welsh green stripe on a van. As long as the ULEZ cameras can tell the difference all will be well.

ULEZ cameras should be linked to Swansea computer via ANPR rather than looking for a green stripe.
