Used EV prices tumble amid flood of cheap Chinese rivals

The value of second-hand electric cars has tumbled since the start of the year as Chinese manufacturers flood Britain with cheap new models.

The average price of the 20 most popular used electric and hybrid vehicles fell 12pc in the three months to March compared with a year ago, according to research by the AA.

Prices for the most popular second-hand combustion engine models also fell 9pc year-on-year in the first quarter as easing chip shortages boosted availability.

More great news for the growth of EV. Keep it coming!

(I can't say that I've seen a flood of Chinese EVs on the roads near me, however - the EVs I see are from the traditional manufacturers)
    You’ll like this then.

BYD Seagull could come to UK in brand's affordable EV push

Interesting - can't see it being anywhere near the £8K equivalent it sells for in China though.
No, probably not but if it were, say, £15k for 200 mile range it would be very attractive, even if only as a second car.

I think BYD will undercut the Dacia Spring price, fairly significantly, as they don't yet have much brand recognition in the UK.

I think it is a good idea for OEMs to start listing their cars at prices they might sell at, rather than giving big discounts. It stops a lot of criticism of the price of electric cars. In practice they have been close to ICE cars for a while after discounts were taken into account.

This special edition Mokka Electric Griffin is £7k cheaper than the normal car

Autonomous car passes learner driver licence test in the US

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 'robotaxi' was subjected to a driving test conducted by a professional examiner – who marked the autonomous car like a human – carrying out manoeuvres such as lane changes, stopping at a stop sign, performing left turns, and reacting quickly to hazards ahead.

You have to read a fair bit into the article to find that the price of used ICEVs also "tumbled" 9%. That suggests an oversupply of vehicles rather than just EVs?

That is a rather anti-EV headline.
Large, and comparable, adjustments for the value of second-hand cars across the board (whether EV or ICE) seems to be just a correction from the anomalies resulting from the COVID and Ukraine impacted parts / new vehicle availability working through the market.

It's been pretty clear for a while that Tesla need a model 2 in order to continue growing. Model 3 & Y must be close to market saturation & the number of new markets is running out fast. Model S, X & the Cybertruck are all niche vehicles & unlikely to help the overall volume very much.

I wonder where the 50,000 missing vehicles are? If they're mainly surplus stock then there could be some tasty discounting in a few weeks.
Yeah - what do you do this Q if you start with plus 50k unsold cars? Cut 100k off production?  What does that do for your capital cost per vehicle?!
    I think....

Musk has said several times that he will use the selling price to match demand with supply. I guess this quarter may be the biggest test yet of that statement.

Obviously that wouldn't be ideal for Tesla's margin, but at least they start with a reasonably healthy positive one. The last thing the rest of the EV industry needs right now is more price reductions by Tesla because many EVs are already being sold at a considerable loss.

It might still be a slightly localised phenomenon for some brands. Plenty of MGs round my way due to local dealership, and I parked in my local village next to an identical coloured model, which might have confused the other driver if I hadn't moved sooner! Not sure I'd even recognise a Polestar and I don't know the different Tesla models even if I recognise the badge.

But lower second hand prices can only help expand the market and normalise it.
