I am using Windows Live Mail 2012 to receive emails to my computer from Google Mail, (similar to my mobile phone but I do not know the "client").

Since yesterday Google have blocked access to Live Mail and try as I can I cannot get access to Windows Live Mail on my desktop or mobile.

I have generated codes but a Gmail box  keeps popping up asking for my password and despite keying in the generated 16 digit code it just keeps asking again and again.

Can someone please tell me a technophobe guide to accessing Windows Live Mail?

I have dozens of folders in Windows Live mail and I really need to keep this "client".

No, it says "We’re having trouble finding that site."

Plus I am using Windows Live Mail 2012, not Outlook.

Please try the outlook.live.com address again, think I screwed up the link in my previous post.

Windows Live Mail 2012 is (was) an email client that MS stopped supporting in 2017, the email service behind it (and the emails) happily continues albeit with different names.

Google sen this out a whie ago

To help keep your account secure, Google will no longer support the use of third-party apps or devices which ask you to sign in to your Google Account using only your username and password. Instead, you’ll need to sign in using Sign in with Google or other more secure technologies, like OAuth 2.0. Learn more
What do you need to do?

Email software, like Outlook 2016 or earlier, has less secure access to your Gmail. Switch to Office 365, Outlook 2019 or newer, or any other email software where you can sign in using Sign in with Google.

An iOS or macOS device has less secure access to your account info like email, calendars and contacts. To keep using your Google Account on that device:

    • Remove your Google Account in your device’s settings
    • Sign in again using Sign in with Google, or select Google as the account type
If that doesn’t work, you may need to update your device’s operating system.

Yes I know but was waiting till the death.

Are you saying that I cannot use WLM 2012?

I have previously tried Outlook by opening an account, but try as I may I could not export/import my WLM folders to Outlook.

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windowslive/forum/all/can-windows-live-mail-support-either-oauth20-or/21dddfaa-5162-4863-8328-d2c11cd38ac7 - "Windows Live Mail does NOT support the OAUTH or XOAUTH2 protocols.  To access a service that uses either of those protocols, open the e-mail service's website in a browser, sign-in to your account, then enable the option "Allow less secure apps...".

As things stand you need to set up an app password for your Google account:

How long this will remain the case for is anybody's guess as they are only intended for legacy apps/configurations still in relatively mainstream use.  Once usage of those programs falls and they are not being used they will fall by the wayside.

Windows Live Mail hasn't been updated since 2012 so the fact you've having to effectively bodge it to allow that to keep working should be telling you things.

Thunderbird should be able to import your mail, folder structure and contents:

Thunderbird is from the same people who make Firefox.  Don't forget, much like Firefox, add-ins are available to make your own.

As per my OP, I did generate 16 digit codes but still kept asking for password.

You put the 16 digit code into Windows Live Mail in the account settings - not where the gmail box pops up.

If you think you need to be putting that app password in anywhere but into the app/program that require it, then you're doing something wrong.
