Ooooohh, happy to have found this thread, thank you. I had been going to post my meal- plan on the grocery challenge thread, but wondered if there was a specific thread.
Like a lot of people, I want to cut down my grocery spending this year. We are a family of 2 adults, 3 teens living at home, and student daughter visiting a few weekends a term, and holidays. Last year I spent £4,600.95 on groceries, and sooooooo much of that was simply "rubbish": sweets, chocolate, biscuits. A lot of it was also because I don't meal plan, so there is a lot of wandering around the shops, every day, throwing stuff in the basket randomly, spending £25, and only having enough ingredients for a couple of meals!!
This year, things have been different. I've only been grocery shopping twice this year, and when I go in for "milk and bread", I only buy milk and bread
Last night when I was cooking tea, I looked through fridge, freezer, and cupboards to see what meals I can make without going to shops. There are plenty!!
I last went shopping yesterday. Tonight we are having quiche (either bacon and leek, using up an aging leek), or bacon, corn and red pepper), with mash potato and veg.
Over the next few days, I have enough in the house to cook:
- carbonara
- an assortment of chicken meals: honey soy sauce chicken, satay chicken, hunters chicken, chicken with roast veg
- stir- fries, with chicken, peppers, brocolli, carrot, maybe chickpeas
- fish fingers/ vegetable fingers with chips or mash, and veg
- spaghetti or pasta with meatballs (sauce from a jar)
- sausages (3 different flavours, which I serve up for people to choose themselves)
- pasta bake (sauce from a jar).
So, quite enough to be going with there........
I dont usually plan in advance what meal we are having when. I have tried that many times when the kids were growing up, and the amount of food that got wasted.......I'd make a plan for a week, then , on the day, suddenly a couple of the kids had an invitation to eat at their friend's house, or suddenly kids with specific dietary needs would be invited to my house. Of course, I never minded having them over, but there was a lot of "Oh- lots of GF friends coming over? Ok, will scratch the plan of pizza for tea." and "We're not really hungry mum: late lunch, had something while out with friends etc"
These days , with them all being a lot more independent, I decide on the day, afternoon even, what we will have for tea. Some nights, especially if I am tired, working late, or into a really good book, everyone organises their own meals, with whatever is in the house!

I do the daily thread but I think I’ll do this one too
Mon - roast pork (half price in Tesco before Christmas), roast potatoes, broccoli, carrots, peas, gravy and apple sauce
Tues - freezer stash. There’s wedges, chips, nuggets, fish fingers in there. I’ll do peas and sweet corn
Weds - shopping coming between 4-5pm. I’ll defrost some cooked chicken and do sweet n sour with added veg, rice, prawn crackers and a few spring rolls left over from the buffet food I got at Christmas.Thurs - beef joint, roast potatoes, carrots, cauliflower, peas, frozen yorkie agsin leftover from Christmas, gravy and horseradish sauce
Fri - chilli I cooked yesterday, with rice, Doritos and salsa. It’s full of veg and lentils as it bulks it out
sat - jacket spuds, cheese and beans
sun - bacon, pea and onion risotto with Parmesan cheese.Mon - Spag Bol same mince as before, full of veg and lentils. Garlic bread on the side
that’s all I got too so far:money::rotfl::T5 -
welcome @sarahj1986 and @Saver-upper. I’ve found the thread really useful, partly for making me plan better, partly for new ideas and recipes. I’ve also saved money.I don’t have to deal with picky kids or unexpected teenagers turning up and expecting to be fed any more but I keep my plans fairly flexible - so it’s not ‘must eat this on Monday’ it’s more of a selection box.3
