We buy coffee beans by the kilo and our usual has increased from £14.58 in January to £18.40 in April and £20.70 for next week's delivery (that is now cancelled)Nonnadiluca said:I don't know if anyone buys lavazza coffee; the double packs were £6 in Tesco last week, £7.20 this week, but I got some in Waitrose yesterday at £6.20. I expect that will go up very soon, but if you get the weekly loyalty coupons on things you buy there, you will probably get a £2.50 off coupon, I've had one a couple of times.4 -
Light on the horizon perhaps - I noted today that Aldi’s pack of sliced turkey (6 slices) had DROPPED in price from £1.69 > £1.45. Didn’t notice until I got home as it was something I was going to buy regardless as we use it regularly for packed lunches. (In case it helps anyone, these are the ones in the box alongside the similar sized sliced chicken)
oh - and for what it’s worth, dhal on a jacket potatoes is lush - nothing wrong with that, and frequently made with yellow split peas! 😉🎉 MORTGAGE FREE (First time!) 30/09/2016 🎉 And now we go again…New mortgage taken 01/09/23 🏡

We buy Lavazza beans in the blue pack (Crema E Aroma). We buy 6 x 1Kg at a time. We just replaced them and paid less than £10 per Kg; just checked Ama*on and a 2 x Kg pack works out at £13.67 per Kg. I think it's a case of shopping around. We put money away every month to save for bulk buys of which this is one of those.maisie_cat said:

I think buying in bulk is the way to go (if you can manage to save to do it) particularly with the huge price rises with more to come no doubt.

It's not Lavazza, I buy beans that have the roast date on them so I know how old they are, in my experience Lavazza from Ama*on is a bit old. I buy lots of shelf stable stuff in bulk, but coffee beans isn't one of them.joedenise said:

We buy from a catering company not Ama*on.maisie_cat said:

Dahl and rice too is standard food for millions of people around the world, nothing wrong with it.EssexHebridean said:oh - and for what it’s worth, dhal on a jacket potatoes is lush - nothing wrong with that, and frequently made with yellow split peas! 😉I'd be more than happy with that provided someone else made it for me and I could stick it a load in the freezer. No man is worth crawling on this earth.
So much to read, so little time.4 -
Not if you only have a small freezer. 2 slices can tuck nicely into a corner.joedenise said:JackieO - It's a waste of time dividing the bread into 4 slice portions if you're using it for toast you can just freeze the loaf as it is and take out what you want when you want it. It's what I do for DH. I only eat wholemeal bread but he likes white bread when we have toast so we keep a wholemeal loaf out to use and keep the white loaf in the freezer and just take out a couple of slices to toast.3 -
The best biriani I have ever made was rice and yellow split peas.Rosa_Damascena said:

I also make a dahl with red lentils, chickpeas and yellow split peas, cheap as chips and its even better served over hard boiled eggs and rice.
It's what works for us that matters. It's great to be able to read and watch what others do, not everything will be tried, but there's some fabulous ideas.
I freeze my bread in slices, I buy it from a bakery that reduces to half price on a Saturday afternoon. I have got a drawer full of, sliced focaccia, sourdough, onion bread, rolls, muffins, crumpets and hot cross buns. Easy to defrost and perfect for the toaster. I slice the rolls as well, then I can easily put a filling in for packed lunches.3 -
Re - the people who find porridge doesn't fill them. I find the same UNLESS I make it with milk (which admittedly adds to the cost of the meal more than water does).
I didn't used to like porridge, it reminded me of what I thought wallpaper paste would taste like, but a few years ago was told for health reasons I needed to learn to. I asked a friend (who did enjoy porridge) and she recommended Quaker oats (again a more expensive brand) as I find these ok, I've never dared deviate from them. To this day though I can't eat them plain and have to have a little fruit with them. I buy a pack of frozen berries and just defrost a few to top the porridge with. I should try experimenting to see if I would be ok with a little cinnamon on top instead.
Porridge as made that way or eggs are the most filling breakfasts I've come across. I've frequently had jobs where I've had to leave home or start early or ones where I don't do enough hours to get a break and I find either of these breakfasts means I'm full till the next meal times
I wonder if the frozen fruits would be an idea for the poster wanting something to add to their jellies?2
