Tesco Own Brand Yoghurt Rip Off

Does no-one watch/read news? It's been well documented that wheat and diary prices are rising in this country. Due to varuious factors, including the rise in animal feed, dairy's closing down and high global demand. If the base ingredients are costing more then so does the finished product.
The supermarkets said they would try and absorb rises, however I don't think much of that! I noticed the yougurts have been creeping up, and Tesco put 1p on a small bread baton, but 10p on a packet of 6 hot-dog rolls!
Yes but I think you've highlighted how cynically selective they are with these increases (if they apply them at all). In my example I don't really taste much difference between the 8p value yoghurt and the "own brand" one yet Tesco see fit to not increase one (despite all their bluster about animal feed, poor harvests, Chinese drinking more milk etc) but whack up the other by 50%0 -
Well i'm obviously that interesting sort of mug buyer that rather than emailing a ceo everytime a price goes up by 8p just works out wheres cheapest and gets it from there.
If you choose to make an assumption about how I choose to buy like your above post then be prepared to be wrong! The only one starting an argument is you by assuming things of others ie your "roll over and take things" assumption and the assumption above!
Some people just have more common sense and knowledge of business (knowing that wholesale prices can rapidly change, therefore RRP's can change and not be due to a company ripping people off) and don't choose to act like some petty Victor Meldrew.
OK smarta r $ e use your Phd in Economics and explain to me why this outfit operating on 4% margins needs to increase one price by 50% yet leave a lower priced all but identical product at the same price ?0 -

Easy. That item has an increased wholesale cost. With the lack of staff time with a business that operates at a 4% margin trying to spread out the increase of one or a few items over say 100,000 other products just for the sake of trying to make prices uniform costs too much money.
If you do that then that would cost x amount of pounds every time that piece of work is done. That amount of money would then have to be clawed back by other putting up the prices of goods. So why do it? It would be a pointless piece of work that ultimately end up costing the consumer even more.
You'd end up paying a lot more money if you want all types of yoghurt to go up by an equal percentage every time wholesale prices go up. This is because you wouldn't have to do it with yoghurt but every comodity in store everytime prices go up, it would cost even more money!0 -

OK I'll accept that - you have bludgeoned me with economic theory. I'll suggest to Sir Tel he hires you as Director of their 2008 advertising campaign "Every rip off helps"0 -
OP, do you complain when they reduce prices too?0

Certainly not but as post #10 points out some price juggling is all part of the build up to BOGOF's or as has yet again been exposed in the papers the great Tesco Xmas fruit & veg giveaway ie carrots 30p a kg October, 60p a kilo November, carrots half price for Xmas 30p a kg December0 -
Another item that has shot up is their own brand Cornish ice cream .I know that milk has gone up,fair enough but in a matter of about 2 months it has nearly doubled in price from £1.38 to nearly £2.60.
Perhaps it is Tesco's way of saying we all need to lose weight.......:D0 -
I would love to be able to worry about a few pence increase of something. Oh for a more simple life!JeremyMarried 9th May 20090
