Road Tax on EV's

The Ignis is not a bad little car!Herzlos said:
You can't get many NEW cars for £14k these days. A Ford Fiesta starts at £16,385.MouldyOldDough said:You have totally missed the pointI have never spent more than £14k on a NEW car and you keep on about buying a second hand EV for the same moneyAs for spending just £4.5k on a ropey old Leaf - do you honestly think that that would be wise ?
I'd be more inclined to spent £4.5k on an old Leaf than an equivalent age/cost Focus. Sure it may not have the full range it started with but it'll do fine given the price.
Edit: There are only 9 cars you can buy in the UK for under £14k, and that's for the base model with no optional extras (like coloured paint)- Dacia Sandero: £10,145
- Kia Picanto: £11,450
- Citroen C1: £12,245
- Dacia Sandero Stepway: £12,245
- MG3: £12,845
- Hyundai i10: £13,420
- Volkswagen up!: £13,545
- Fiat Panda: £13,655l
- Suzuki Ignis: £13,749
- Fiat 500 hybrid - £14,005 (I've left this in because you can probably haggle the £5 off).
I might have something like the C1 for a 2nd runabout car (even then I'd rather spend the £13k on a used Renault Zoe), but I don't think I'd want any of them as an only car.
The i10 is pretty decent too
The problem being there will be none in stock
The Dacia is the bargain of the year
If I was half as smart as I think I am - I'd be twice as smart as I REALLY am.0 -
I had an i10 rental car before Covid and whilst it was nice enough the base model engine is woeful. I'd need to spec it beyond the £14k if I was buying one.
Anyway, are you really saying that those cars in base spec are literally the only ones you'd consider?

MG are apparently bringing an electric MG3 to the UK next year.0

I have read and enjoyed the comment on this particular topic but we are going through the honeymoon phase on EVs and at some point it will end.
Yes the government of the day may come up with a *Pence per Mile* solution but you can guarantee that some form of tax will be applied - £100 per vehicle looks a reasonable charge to cover the cost of administration - Then of course there will be some form of tax applied when charging at public charge points.
Remember the current system generates over £30 billion income - for example people are complaining about increases in taxation so I doubt people will accept owners/drivers of EVs being exempt from paying their share.

Anyway, are you really saying that those cars in base spec are literally the only ones you'd consider?I would not touch an MG3 with a 10 foot barge pole - they are outdated and polliuting - they are cheaply made and cheaply driven - they should not have been allowed to desecrate the name of a once great UK name.Do they even offer an AUTOMATIC version ?- doesn't look like itThey are like an Allegro, or Marina was in terms of modernity and design - ie) 20 years out of date. I mean dear god - a 105bhp 1.5 naturally aspirated engine.I would spend my £12k on a 3 year old Suzuki Swift or similar.

Once-great UK name? I thought we were talking about MG.MouldyOldDough said:Herzlos said:I had an i10 rental car before Covid and whilst it was nice enough the base model engine is woeful. I'd need to spec it beyond the £14k if I was buying one.

I am talking about pre-leyland times

Even then. The Midget, for example, was basically a tarted-up Morris Minor.MouldyOldDough said:[Deleted User] said:

(As of course was the Marina. And then the Ital.)
My personal memory doesn’t go back to the 1930s, but I believe they used Morris bits from the start. The “Morris Garages” name is a bit of a clue.2 -
Thought this thread was about EV? So what has an MG3, a car that is getting on for 15 years old, got to do with anything?I would not touch an MG3 with a 10 foot barge pole - they are outdated and polliuting - they are cheaply made and cheaply driven - they should not have been allowed to desecrate the name of a once great UK name.Do they even offer an AUTOMATIC version ?- doesn't look like itThey are like an Allegro, or Marina was in terms of modernity and design - ie) 20 years out of date. That was my fault. Mouldy was trying to imply that EVs were vastly more expensive than combustion by trying to compare a £35k EV to a £14k ICE and I pointed out that the base spec MG3 is one of the only cars available in his budget.RichardD1970 said:
