Road Tax on EV's

How much will this be and will they simply class all EVs in one group or by cost price ?
Obviously - its going to happen - sooner rather than later
The government failed to think this through fully

If I was half as smart as I think I am - I'd be twice as smart as I REALLY am.

I don't think the government failed to see it, just the choosed not to mention it.

They'll have to introduce a road fund type tax on them at some point but why put people off buying them now?

    I reckon £500+ pa
And unless they go back on their word and increase the road tax on low emission IC cars - those IC cars are going to be in demand for low mileage drivers.

  • They may road tax EVs sometime in the future but all that are already on the road will be free same as all the free and cheap tax petrol and diesels from pre April 2017. If they were to want more revenue they would increase tax on these, but they have to stay in bands from when they were new just like the crazy priced big petrols frpm early 2000's

Have the government committed never to increase those? I’d be very surprised if they have.

I think it starts in 2025 from memory.
All cars before should stay free from Road tax, my friend has a Prius and MG EV.
The Prius is 7 years old and still tax free.

They usually roll these things forward rather than retrospective.

By list price is the easiest way to band it.

They removed EV’s from the luxury car tax. Road pricing will replace road tax and fuel duty.

VED was set at zero to encourage people to buy them which has worked. As VED is based on emissions and electric vehicles have none charging per mile seems fair although charging based on size or weight could be an option. Smaller cars use less road space when parked and reduce congestion queue sizes, lighter vehicles cause less damage to roads.
