That's a spectacularly unhelpful attitude from Mr LH. Everybody occasionally makes a mistake & I'm sure he isn't perfect himself. Hearing about you sitting up in your bedroom feeling bad made me feel sad for you. So you are 'supposed' to ring the rescue on Tuesday? That would be a joint decision, so I agree with @badmemory that losing the number & 'quietly forgetting' sounds like a good move. You haven't had Bear for very long. He saw a chance to escape & have some fun & did what a lot of animals would do....he took it. Sending him back to the Rescue because you accidentally facilitated him getting out seems like a sledgehammer to crack a nut, as well as unfair on both you & the dog.

Thank you badmemory and foxgloves. I am hoping it was just anger talking. I will see later when he gets up. He may or may not be talking to me.
Unfortunately losing the phone number won't work as it is on an email in his in box not mine as well as on my phone.
Will let you know what is happening later.

Well nobody can 'make' you phone anybody, @ladyholly. It's a big decision (hopefully just anger talking) & should be arrived at jointly for the best reasons. Honestly, Man-Nonsense does my head in! Thankfully there's not much of it in our house. Mr F is big on equality & I'm too feisty!
    Hope it will be ok.

Yes @ladyholly you have a voice here! What right does he have to rule the roost, especially given how much he also wanted Bear?!  I know you've mentioned that he has health issues and maybe this unrealistic stance is part of that...but he's going to have to realise that women have got the vote now.  We are all here rooting for you.   Love Humdinger xx

Another on your side here.  It was an accident.  My FB feed is always full of lost/found dogs, these things happen.  If Mr LH thinks he should be rehomed then he should be the one making the arrangements, but hopefully he will calm down and see sense.

Thank you all for your kind words. My eyes are now leaking. He is speaking - just. Now is not the time to try to discuss anything but hopefully he is calming down. He does have mental health and anger issues but thankfully the anger doesn't often happen. The mental health has been ongoing for a long time. Sometimes better sometimes worse.

Everyone makes mistakes sometimes.  I hope Mr LH is less angry now and I agree you should not shoulder all the blame.  Why did he not help you when bringing the lawn mower in or do you normally lock Bear in a room when the front door is open?  Easily done as my DDs collie comes bounding out of the front door immediately anyone calls but luckily she doesn't go any further than the garden path and driveway.

Dogs escape ! Dogs chase things ! It’s nature, mine escaped a few weeks ago and was running rings round a smaller dog on a lead barking at it and petrifying it to death …..

    Hi LadyH

Your diary caught my eye because I have a similar amount of time to yourself (possibly slightly longer) before we are debtfree too. We also have a weekly wage (mine), a monthly wage (DH) and termly bills (student daughter), which I agree leads to a juggling act at times .

I've just been reading through.  I'm sorry to hear your latest posts. My dog hasn't got great recall either. We had him in training as he was a year old due to him running off, only for the first lockdown to be called weeks later which affected me being able to implement the training course! Hopefully this was just a kneejerk reaction from Mr LH and he's now calming down

In reality, I understand the rescue centres are pretty full atm, with lockdown pets now abandoned. It's quite possible even if you rang them, they'd say they had no room. Would a little white lie help here and say if asked if you'd rang that they are full and have suggested some dog training courses. Is there any way of making the front safe so the dog can't dash off if it sees an open front door? It'll depend on the house layout, you could do this at my house, though it would cost us but not at my parents who have an open plan layout. I think you've been very reasonable and understanding that your DH MH is colouring his views. I don't think I possess your patience I'd have told mine to do the ringing around  asking about re-homing  not for the dog but for himself - hahahaha.
