Yes it would be easier to have my shopping delivered but I am trying to keep going for as long as possible. The less I do the worse my physical health gets. I am hoping that we will be able to get my sisters mobility scooter here at some point and that it still workes ok. It hasnt been used since she died 5 years ago but my bil was planning to start using it so I am hoping he ha done what is necessary. At the moment I cant get to it easilly as there is stuff in front of it but once the valuer has been next week I can start clearing and packing stuff I can sell before getting a house clearance/ auctioneer (if there is anything worth going to auction) in. If I lived nearer it would all be much easier as I could more easily sell the bigger stuff but it is what it is. Sorry a long winded answer to a simple question.beanielou said:Sorry to hear Bear has been on an adventure. Would it be easier for you to get your shopping delivered with a saver slot?

Once the valuer has been maybe it would be cost effective to hire a man and van to bring stuff to yours if it makes life easier?https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/6466032/an-in-between-phase

My plan is to pack up what I want I want to bring home over several visits then mr LH and I will go down in the car and my sil will hire a van and he and dd will come as well and we will load both vehicles which should be plenty for what we want to bring here. We don't have space for a huge amount and there is a lot of big furniture hence getting a clearance company or an auction house for anything worthwhile. It is a big house and there will be a lot of rubbish that a clearance company will deal with. The tip there charges non residents to visit their tip. I just wish I could find a company there that will pay for unwanted furniture but they just want to recycle it. I read that as we will charge you to clear the house and then sell anything decent to make more money. If we were nearer I could sell it myself but the logistics of that is very difficult to manage.PennysIntoPounds said:Once the valuer has been maybe it would be cost effective to hire a man and van to bring stuff to yours if it makes life easier?1 -
I would read it that way too. Hopefully you and family will be able to make use of one or two large bits that the auction house don't want that can go in SiL's hire van.
Fair enough if you don't have time, energy or inclination but might it be worth posting things for decent prices and specifying collection only and only on dates you'll be there? A few quid is better than donating money to a company you're already paying 😁 Have you thought about staying overnight on an occasion or two so you can get more done without having to travel each day?https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/6466032/an-in-between-phase

Might it be better to give it to charity. The British Heart Foundation, was collecting something from a neighbour the other day. It might just feel better than basically dumping it. Of course it depends on what you are looking at, so obviously just a thought. Anything though that simplifies things too.

After we had taken everything we wanted from Mum & Dad's house & donated lots of bags to charity, we booked the British Heart Foundation to come & collect everything else. They charged £200. We were fine with that, as it was a relief to have it all done & get the house thoroughly cleaned & on the market. Like you, we both lived at a distance.....my sister 50 miles away & me 75 miles away. We spent so much time travelling to sort everything out that £200 to do the final bulk clearance felt like such a relief. I did bring back heaps of books, which I sold online, but with our parents dying barely a year apart, we were just exhausted with it all & paid BHF willingly.

I looked at the British Heart Foundation and accordintg to their website they charge to clear a house between £400 to £900 on average. As there is probabaly more than the average amount of furniture the cost may well be more. This seems a little excessive as much of the furniture is saleable. Its simply too much for us to keep.foxgloves said:After we had taken everything we wanted from Mum & Dad's house & donated lots of bags to charity, we booked the British Heart Foundation to come & collect everything else. If it was an easier journey I wouldnt mind so much. I can pack fairly quickly (lots of practice). The books will be a nightmare - approx 6 x 6ft bookcases full. Fortunately bil has already sold a lot of stuff and yes I will probably end up getting either a charity or a private house clearer. I have thought of using ebay to sell as buyer on there tend to be more obliging with timing than other places. Yes I can stay there but it upsets Bear when I am away but it may well come to that it depends how I get on and what there is left after we have moved the stuff I am bringing home.I am sure it will be ok in the end it is just thinking about it.

Evening AllThe load of washing I did yesterday put away this morning before going shopping. I wish I hadnt bothered with the shopping as there were queues at the till and the cigarette counter and I needed to visit a couple of other shops where there were also queues so ended up having to wait almost half an hour for the bus as I missed the one I was aiming for. Did some tidying on my return home then a friend dropped in for a coffee and chat. She returned later with a large piece of cheese she had been given so I think cheese and potato pie on Monday. We have had some heavy rain and a few claps of thunder this afternoon. Fortunately after Bears walk but he has been under the table for most of the afternoon. It has saved me from watering though.
Mr LH has put an old tape deck to go to the tip so something else out of the way. I just wish he would sort the rest out. If I try to push him he will resist and simply ignore me so it has to come from him.I am off now to read my book which I have almost finished, Have a nice evening.6 -
To use the tip, you can just book under BIL's address, or take something with his address if it's show id on arrival."Good financial planning is about not spending money on things that add no value to your life in order to have more money for the things that do". Eoin McGee2
