15months to debt free - I hope

If you think the will may include issues then definitely get someone to deal with it. You have enough on your plate to deal with. For a straight forward one, I will be honest I would resent the cost, but if you are looking at probable problems - let others deal with it. The worst thing is the length of time it may be dragged out by. Expect 6 months whilst they post in the Gazette to find debtors even before they start.

I wonder if a courier would courier a cat to Scotland.
Yes there are companies that courier pets but she is quite elderly and the trip from the south coast to Scotland is a long one and I cannot give any idea of the state of her health. I would hate to lumber you with a large vet bill.

enthusiasticsaver said:Sorry about your Bil. Do they have a cat fostering scheme nearby? My DD fosters cats for her area in Bristol but I think most large cities have agencies where people will take cats on a temporary basis. My DD got her cat by fostering it after his owner died and now she has adopted it permanently.
I have googled cat fostering but the only place that seems to offer in the right area is cats protection.

Evening all.I have messaged cats protection and emailed them with a complaint about the service or should that be a lack of. I have also messaged another rescue in the right area to see if they have space. If I dont hear back by Monday I will ring them. Mr LH is taking me to bils house next Wednesday as I have an appointment to register the death. I could do it up here but then I wouldnt get any certificates until the info had gone back to his area so for the sake of speed Wed. it is. Mr LH is going to dismantle the computer and anything else that might be easily nickable from an empty house. I know that you are not supposed to remove stuff before probate but to leave highly stealable stuff in an empty property is asking for trouble. We have ordered a metal storage shed where stuff can be put until we can sell it or give it away. I will however keep careful note of anything that is disposed of just in case. There is nothing in the house that is worth much as he sold my sisters jewellery, stamp collection and some valuable books. At the moment we have a plastic one made the well known plastic storage garden storage company for the garden stuff but as it is falling apart the new one will eventually take its place. There will be no one to complain as according to the will I am the only person to inherit the contents of the house and garden as other bequests are money which will come from his savings and the residue in charity donations. He has fish in his pond and I have found someone to rehome them. Much easier than the poor cat.I really do think a solicitor will be a blessing even though its a very expensive one as I really dont have a clue and I am not good with working out money things. I have been in touch with his solicitor but they have failed to ring back so will have to do it again on Monday. The forms for the funeral director are all filled out and I will post them tomorrow. The company bil picked seems to have some odd systems according to the bereavement service at the hospital. There will be no funeral at bils insistence and he has a prepaid plan so that is one thing less to worry about. He did the same for my sister and to be honest there are very few people who would be able and be fit enough to go and as there are no relatives except Mr LH and I and our dd and dgds who all live in my area or very near we might as well toast him here rather than all traipsing 120 miles. He did the same for my sister.I had my eyes tested and all is well after the cataract op then ended up talking to the registrar while I was on the bus home. I have done a load of washing but nothing else except deal with Bil stuff.I have sort of eaten healthily today but did have a Gre*** sausage roll after the optician. I did enjoy it as it is one of my guilty secrets.Have a lovely weekend.5

If there are donations to any of the larger charities it is a good idea to leave it to a solicitor. Charities are known to be a serious pain in the proverbial & will push & push for more money & more speed. You are best out of it. Unless he has antiques & the like then the normal valuation for house contents is £500. Any questions why don't you go onto the bit on here that deals with such things. The deaths etc part of marriage & relationships, they are really good on there & will point you in the right direction.

Funny you should say that. My bil was only saying when I visited last week that when you make a good donation the charities then hound you for more money. He was always a great charity supporter and gave what he could. The charities named are all major national ones unfortunately. It is the charity bit that worries me with being executer as well as the legal bits. I dont want to make mistakes and end up in chaos so even with the expense a solicitor is worth it to me.

I have stopped all my charity donations that have my name attached because of the hounding. I will put money in tins, well the current equivalent but I will no longer donate from my bank account, especially connected to my email address & I really hate it when they knock on the door as it is never a "give a fiver now" it is £20 or more a month. It is a shame because the donation by name etc gives them a larger donation. I do donate items to a charity that whilst they have my email they do not ask for more money & just notify me once a year of what my donations have been worth. So I will stick with that. It just doesn't feel like charitable giving when they try to put your arm up your back.
