I am so sorry for your loss, take care of yourself xx"Good financial planning is about not spending money on things that add no value to your life in order to have more money for the things that do". Eoin McGee0

Very sorry for your loss. Please look after yourself, there’s lots to do and think about.1

Just to add, don't feel that you have to do everything. Your health is important. Hire house clearers, let a solicitor deal with the probate/letters of administration. Don't burnout.
Cats are more their own people than dogs so will adapt easier than Bear.1 -
Thank you everyone. I have spent half the day talking on the phone. The cats protection are being difficult. She is registered for their gueadianship scheme but I think it was a waste of time as they cant give a time scale to find her another home even when I explained the urgency. Their suggestion was to put her in a cattery but at 17 years old I think that would be an awful thing for her plus do they think I am made of money. They also say I have to be there to sign her over so that will be another trip at a cost of about £50.I would have assumed that they have a sytstem for some sort of remote signature. I really am very unimpressed at there obstruction. It is the last thing I need. Mr LH cannot take me down as long as the cat is there so anything I need to do requires taxis amd I cant start to pack things up until i can get my boxes down there.I have also received a couple of forms from the funeral director which I will need to fill in when I have the answers to some of the questions like who was the attending dr when he died etc so I will need to phone the hospital first. Mr LH is nagging about getting in touch with the fish rescue to ask them to collect the fish. I have my opticians appoint first thing and the register office will be ringing me at some point to make an appointment but I will be registerinering the death locally so will have to ring them for an appointment and so it goes on.
I know it will cost a small fortune but I am handing over the administartion of the will to a his solicitor as I am not confident in getting it all correct and there are a couple of complications in the bequests which I dont want to deal with. I know it is the easy way out but the peace of mind is worth it to me.I spent some time this morning wandering around the house thinking how am I going to pack everything up. I will bring the smaller stuff home, there are one or two pieces of furniture that might be worth going to auction and the will be divided between the tip and a house clearance company. (Flat pack furniture doesnt move well). The healthy eating has completely gone out of the window for now but I will try to get back to it tomorrow. A fish suppeer this evening hasnt helped but I couldnt be bothered to cook as I have slept for more than three hours the last couple of nights. I was awake at 3am worrying how I was going to get back to bils house to register his death within the required 5 days but the hospital bereavemnet team have assured me that it will be ok and I can do it here. Why are worries always worse in the middle of the night?I think thats enough whinging and worrying for tonight. I have done the sorting out after a death before but my sister was still alive then and my bil did some of it. Now I am largely on my own as Mr LH justs gets stressed about everything. When he rang me this morning he complained he was soooo tired as the phone and the dog had woken him up. This was at about 10.30am!!! Sorry I have now added more whinging.I should say Bear was pleased to see me and enjoyed his little bit of the fish supperI hope all are ok and have a quiet night.6 -
That’s dire about the guardianship scheme, what’s the point of it then 😞
Don’t worry about healthy eating at a time like this, just look after yourself.I’m sorry you’re having to deal with all this on your own. Is there no one else eg adult children?I get knocked down but I get up again (Chumbawamba, Tubthumping)3 -
So dissapointing about the cat protection.

The guardian scheme probably works ok if the situation isn't urgent but isn't good if there is an urgent situation. If it wasn't for bil neighbour i don't know what we would do.

I would imagine that in most cases the guardianship needs to kick in promptly.

The guardianship seems to be a waste of time. People die unexpectedly or after a short period of ill health all the time. What's the point if it can't allow for that?
I think a solicitor to do all the hard work will be worth every penny. It will take a lot of pressure off you, especially if there are complicated parts.
Don't worry about the healthy eating for now, just do whatever you need to do."Good financial planning is about not spending money on things that add no value to your life in order to have more money for the things that do". Eoin McGee2 -
Sorry about your Bil. Do they have a cat fostering scheme nearby? My DD fosters cats for her area in Bristol but I think most large cities have agencies where people will take cats on a temporary basis. My DD got her cat by fostering it after his owner died and now she has adopted it permanently.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free Wannabe, Budgeting and Banking and Savings and Investment boards.
