It is a decent piece of journalism, does have mistakes and still missing what is potentially the biggest mistake which is the tariff for 'Together Energy' (inc. Bristol) which was guaranteed until 2023... .. .screenshots for that one in the first post on this thread.
Good to see that the legal experts comments were in line with my thoughts on this in general, so have to wait and see if Ofgem does anything at a more general level.

  • Is it me, or are British Gas STILL issuing mixed messages, mentioning both 1st April and 31st July 2022?

Extract from an unsolicited email just received from BG, supposedly 'confirming my tariff.'

Your tariff and the price cap
A mix of lower sources of energy supply and increases in demand have created a sharp rise in the cost of energy recently - this means it now costs us up to five times more to buy the energy that we sell on to you than it did a year ago. As a result we have increased our prices to the level of the Ofgem energy price cap, which went up on 1st April.

Your current tariff will end on 31st July 2022 - we'll let you know before then what your options are, including the availability of our fixed-rate tariffs, which will protect you from future price rises. Just to let you know, as your current tariff is protected by the cap, your rates won't exceed this cap.

No, that is accurate, your tariff is variable but has an end date, so April 1st is when the rate changed, 31st July is when the tariff itself ends and you will be moved to their standard variable tariff if you don't pick a different one by then.
The rates for your current tariff and the standard variable tariff are the same.

  • I must just be 'hard of comprehension.'

I think it is often just a misunderstanding about the difference between 'tariff' and 'price'.
The price of a variable tariff can change, and the the tariff itself can also end.

The first paragraph quoted is fairly clear.
The second paragraph could have been better worded IMO. Taken out of context it does suggest the curent tariff is fixed. Doesn't say that the cap protecting it is variable.

To be fair though, between now and 31st July the cap is fixed...

Had the same email. To me it looks like BG are trying to panic less well informed into fixing by "threatening" another price rise from 1st August !!!
