That should suggest that there is no gas meter at the property or if there is the contractor has made a mistake and blocked the meter into the housing it's situated. Do you have any gas appliances? Obvious ones would be a gas cooker or gas central heating?
Someone please tell me what money is

I suggest inviting a GasSafe registered person, such as the one who services your boiler, to come round and have a look at the situation. They should be able to trace the pipework from the gas appliances to wherever the supply enters the property. It is important that you find the shut-off valve, and also what's happening regarding the meter. I have to say that if the meter is found, and you provide the supplier with a reading, when there has been nothing but estimates for the last 8 years, it might not end well! If the engineer confirms that you have an unmetered supply, then it will be interesting to see how things develop!
  • I agree will be interesting, it was a new house so did start from zero.  Have compared what I pay compared to my friend with same house and I have been paying more for gas but he is with BG and I am not so tariff will vary

How very bizarre!!     So you ARE getting a gas supply, but cannot locate a meter, so have no idea what you're using, or if the billed amounts are anywhere near what they should be.

Surely its not possible for builders to install a non-metered direct gas feed, so it must be there somewhere.

I'd be prising off that hardwood cover, and seeing what lurks beneath!!

How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)

Another thought...what room in the house is directly behind that panel?

Integral garage, kitchen, under stairs cupboard?

My set up was like that but the builder simply left an empty meter box - the meter itself and valves was in the garage..

Has it perhaps been boxed in ?

The gas pipe which enters the floor slab of the garage will be bright yellow.

I thought it was a requirement of a boiler service that the engineer checked that the main isolator valve was accessible and operable.

  • OP have you ever had your gas equipment serviced ?  If not it could probably do with a clean and would give you the opportunity to see if the engineer can shed any light on it?

I have no brown ground level box.  As far as can tell meter readings have all been estimates.
Even if your bills are estimates there should still be a meter serial number on the bill, can you check that against your neighbours and see if it is a match.

I'd still like to see an answer to this one as well...

The top picture actually looks more like a gas one than electric.   In my days gas meter boxes were always deeper than electric because the rigid gas pipe had to come up the outside of the wall (rather like the pipe in the top photo) , whereas the electric supply cable is a bit more flexible and can come through the cavity.
