No Gas Meter

I moved into a new build house some 8 years ago, the builder was not a great one and am aware that other houses had their gas/electricity meters mapped to the wrong house and have been numerous issues with the quality of build.
I have always been paying for gas and electricity with one supplier. I was trying to get a refund on my account as am over £500 in credit (another story). In order to do that I was told that they needed to have a reading from the last 7 days in order to refund the money so went out to find them. I have an electricity meter, but no gas meter. Where it should be, and I have a friend with the same design of house, is just a blank plinth where the gas meter should be mounted.
Does anyone have any idea as to how this situation should be dealt with? I hasten to add I have always paid for it but am assuming it has always been on estimates based on the size of my house, but am thinking if they cannot measure as to how much I have used how can they charge for it.

I am a little confused - if you have no gas meter what form does your heating take.
I also have a gas meter box but the meter is in the garage.Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill1 -
Last time I saw a gas meter (admittedly many years ago) the gas came in one side of the meter and out the other.
So surely it must be there somewhere?2 -
Usually the Gas Meter would be located right next to the gas shut off valve. If you don't know where your gas shut off valve is then you've got a whole can of worms!3

Presumably bills estimated and not checked?

WowBeen there 8 years and never seen your gas meter, especially if you were aware of metering issues with neighboring properties
I presume you do have gas heating or hob/oven?
If so, then there will be a meter there somewhere2 -
Do any bills show a reading that's flagged 'Actual' or 'Meter Reader'? If not, you may find that the first meter reading triggers a massive catch up bill.0

You may owe £500 (or more)
When you find your meter 1) note the serial number and then compare it with your bill
2) read the meter - it will in m3 . Multiply by 11,2 to get kWh . Multiply by 3p (unit cost average over 8 years) that will give you the total cost. Now deduct the total DD's you've paid.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill2 -
I find it hard to believe that any supplier would allow an account to remain on estimated readings for 8 years...Do check the previous bills carefully for any signs of an actual reading from a meter reader.I'm also very surprised that this is the first time a meter reading has been requested by the supplier, given their obligation to provide at least one accurate bill every year they should have been asking for meter readings long before now...4

On a slightly different aspect.
I assume that when you moved in and gave the supplier your readings you took out a 12 month fix. When that expired did you take out another one and annually ever since. If not you may well have been paying over the odds.Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0
