And me too -  for the sake of a builder and a new meter box - I'd want to know what was on my property. - what ever it was.  I just can't see the reluctance.
To put a straightforward update on here!
“I showed him where the meter should be, and he left” - what, no “let’s have a shufti in there then”? or any details of a discussion about what he thought whatsoever ?!!

Its a wind up. If its new build, pipe will be plastic yellow, cannot be internal(plastic melts in a fire), has to be outside the property., pipe cannot be brought up in the cavity.
Theyve probably all electric lol or some extra building work has bricked it away
  • So in response to a few of these questions;
    - yes I have a friend with exactly the same house design as me and his gas meter is where where my flat panel is
    - the housebuilder has confirmed in writing as to where my gas meter should be, which is where my flat panel is
    - I have looked all round my property to ascertain if there was something that I had missed, or in Barrett's infinite wisdom they decided I really liked a good game of hide and seek, but to no avail.
    - yes have a gas boiler, together with a gas hob, to my knowledge when they have been serviced they have never looked for a meter.
    - yes I have been paying for gas since we moved in and we were automatically connected to Eon

You have to get that panel off!

  • I would love to be able to say this is a wind up but it isn't  Also do not think it is prudent to break into a panel with force where their ought to be gas pipes behind it with zero qualifications in that regards.

Just to recap... Are your bills based on actual (smart "stealth" meter😉) readings or estimates?
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)

But that's the situation you are in -  a basic DIY task - screwdriver down the edge and help with a hammer if necessary

    or get a builder
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

Your supplier won't remove the panel as it's nothing to do with them. At the end of the day you're the homeowner so are responsible. Have you asked Barrett's to send someone out as they shouldn't have left it like that. This really should have been sorted shortly after you bought the property.

Agree this should have been on your defects list with Barratts from day one - how on earth did you manage to give the supplier any opening meter reads.

Too much dithering about - get on with it.

You had better hope that your meter isn't one of those you say have got mixed up.

Get ready for a shock. Could be in your favour or not, but there is no way estimated reads can be anywhere near the truth after 8 years in a new build with no history.
