So you live in the place where custom motor vehicles are built? (Or at least the town's name is given to them). ;)
Can't be the one I'm thinking of:

    Oh and a random thought...
I also saw a Volkswagen ID roll up - back into a Tesla space then try and work out how to plug in.  No idea if that is feasible with an adaptor and an account or what.  Anyway he gave up and headed off to the non-Tesla bank of chargers - which was full.  If he was low on charge - how long did he have to sit watching for a space to come free?  Then another however long to charge...
And what happens if it takes so long one exceeds the approved time to be in the services??  (yes I know they're not parking fines....but would be mighty annoying to have to fight them all)

You have 2 hours parking. You should have enough charge by then to drive on.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

What if you're waiting 1.5 hours for a charging station?

  • From what I can tall it's heading in that direction. I think we'll still have petrol and deiseal cars but it probably won't be worth it to continue driving them unless you can afford all the taxes
  • Any thread which mentions EVs you'll get the comments against them. Now some are reasonable points regarding infrastructure and charging and current prices but sometimes I get the feeling that people have a check list of objections that they are going down.

Very, very few current EV owners would consider going back to ICE (there's a survey I saw which you can no doubt find online). Usually they have specific user cases (towing, range etc.) which will no doubt be adressed as things develop. There's a professional photographer on one of the EV forums who does long trips at 20K+ miles a year and is very happy with using an EV.

Infrastructure will certainly be critical for such long distance travel for which we really need a government that plans and has a bit of foresight, but I'm constantly amazed at the bladder capacity of some people who insist on amazing ranges. They must be the ones who ignore all the overhead gantry signs saying 'Take a break'..
  • So all new cars to be EV in 10 years ish, no new gas fires in about 10 years ish, oodles of electric fires electric heat pumps etc. It'll be a great problem to find sufficient juice. Power stations closing down, limited places for solar and wind, especially on a calm night.  Unless the government starts planning and building nuke stations we are in deep doodah.
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.

How many petrol stations will still be open if there's no electricity?

You have it right Peter - we shut down coal fired power stations too early before we had an alternative - we have to use inefficient gas power stations and we are supplying weapons to Ukraine to fight Russia. Soon there will be no gas at all when they turn if off.

EDF are building a nuclear station here and so are the Chinese - another two countries we are falling out with and what are doing - putting up windmills and praying for sun and wind.

It takes 20 years to build a nuclear power station

5 years to build a Hydro electric dam

2 years to build a coal fired power station.

To the primary 5s its a no brainer - they won't be able to afford electricity even if the planet is saved.
