Interestingly KK, H&S is under my remit in new job (first time I've dealt with it) and near miss reporting is very low despite being a high risk operational setting. I've been looking into the reasons and not wanting to be seen to get others into trouble is one of the demotivating factors.
I'm planning a project in new year to try and promote NMR and try and frame it in a positive light as a learning opportunity to prevent something terrible happening in the future, not sure how successful it will be.5 -
Thank you 🙏PennysIntoPounds said:What an unnecessary stress at work!
Well done for being professional and as calm as one can be. No.2 is a very apt nickname 😂💩
The wildflower turf sounds gorgeous
It should be … 🤞😉 Tomorrow I have to wander up and down with a damp finger end, smearing the dust like orchid seed on the surface of the soil … (I kid you not 😊).
Trust me, I will have them up in lights! 😉😂🤩Brewerspride said:Looking forward to seeing pics of the wild flowers at the front next year. What a stressful time at work you've had - I'm assuming it is still far better than the last place?Hope you have a well deserved relaxing weekend KK.
Yes, still much better than the old place ❤️ Unfortunately the guy who is my number two is strikingly naive and lacking in management exposure. He really doesn’t get it and so it’s clashing horribly with his self identity of being a ‘good bloke’ iyswim …
It should be a quite, pottering one 😊❤️
That is absolutely the right way of framing it 😊CCW007 said:Interestingly KK, H&S is under my remit in new job (first time I've dealt with it) and near miss reporting is very low despite being a high risk operational setting. The other thing you can do is make it far more dynamic and collective, by regularly going out and walking the floor as a group (production manager, shift manager, you) looking at the things that are ‘uncomfortable’ to work with (dead lighting, trip hazards, stacking things too high, poor housekeeping, lack of space, blocked or impeded walkways etc etc) - as these things get fixed (production and shift managers have the power to make this happen) and people see that ‘The Management care’ slowly, slowly there will be a rise in spontaneous reporting. And if nothing else, there will be an improvement in housekeeping, fewer trip hazards etc. 😉
Also, when investigating the root causes of an unsafe act or condition, absolutely make it about the process and NOT the person, avoiding a blame culture. Have you read HSG 65 Human Factors? It’s quite old now but still valid about the reasons people break rules that they absolutely apply to them and how to reengineer the process so that it’s easier to do the right thing than the wrong thing.
Recognition and feedback about what happens as a result of things being reported is worth doing as well - like case studies in the monthly news letter or on the company intranet or just on the H&S board 😊
Do you have a H&S committee or similar. People should feel able to report things through their section representatives as well.I wish you well with this. It is one of the hardest parts of the job …

Absolutely agree with all you say, lack of visible action is clearly an issue at the site so acknowledgement and feedback will be critical.
There is a central H&S team and then the operations H&S manager reports to me so we do have a good network of support but need better processes. I did think about a quarterly newsletter which will be a lot of work but will give much better visibility. Plus we have staff boards around the place.3 -
I know I don't have all the information but your deputy sounds miserably unsuited to the job in hand. You stick to your guns! Threatening to keep facts from you! He's creating a major legal liability for the company. Do agree re making it safe for people to report stuff but presumably you can't be overtaken by disaster while improving the culture? How's he going to feel if someone is seriously injured or killed? Love Humdinger xx3

You’ve pretty much summed it up for me. Thank you xHumdinger1 said:I know I don't have all the information but your deputy sounds miserably unsuited to the job in hand. You stick to your guns! It sat very heavily on me yesterday evening - partly because I hate huge confrontations like that, partly because in circumstances like that I have to use my size nines (I normally take a six!), partly because it was massively triggering for why I left H&S behind in the first place (when I first got into H&S in my twenties, a really well liked person got pulled into a machine by his foot and was trapped there - his screams could be heard all over the noisy factory …. He was working inside a guard, at a supervisor’s instruction … everyone on the shopfloor knew that this supervisor was doing this with his team and nobody told us … still makes me feel sick to this day … ).Due to all of the above and the fact it was still going around my head when I went to bed, I purposely breathed all that Hoocha over the plant I have in my bedroom and slept well 😊 Thankfully.Apart from dealing with the groceries delivery (and finding space in the freezer for the larger chicken I am buying because MiL is coming to Christmas lunch) I have a free day today. Just what’s needed tbh … 😊KKAs at 15.12.25:

Work sounded horrendous, but I’m glad your day improved when you left. Well done for ordering those house bits - I am one for putting up with the broken bits for too long too, and it’s always a joy when you get to use unbroken things again!

I appreciate not everyone wants to buy from big river but this is the design the landscaper recommended. 😊
I sent him a link to my riddler last night, as he really liked it! 😉😊 He manipulates a LOT of compost for his clients over a year, so I suspect this might be something he goes for 😊

Phew to the work stress. I can understand how that must rest heavily on you.
Thanks for the membrane link, I have tried a few with varying degrees of success.Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became
In the event the proverbial hits the fan then co-habitees are better stashing their cash than being mortgage free !!4 -
I was reluctant to take on H&S again for all of these reasons … But the tiny commute and the early Friday finish does make a big difference …Watty1 said:Phew to the work stress. I can understand how that must rest heavily on you.

My pleasure with sharing the link. Landscaper says it doesn’t fray like the black stuff does 😊

I’m fairly certain the first lot of membrane you’ve posted is the stuff I’ve got and it really is good stuff.
