Lovely finds of forgotten money.ย
It sounds like you have things under control with the DH situation. The one thing to be aware of is that once he's started receiving his DB pension - he could be limited to ยฃ10K a year into a new pension if he decides to go back into employment... That may not be the case if he finds another DB pension so that might require further investigation.Achieve FIRE/Mortgage Neutrality in 2030

The Tesco list wasn't overly wrong- if anything, it was short on the milk (we get through about 4pts a day) and doritos (one of DS2's favourite things (ARFID child (suggested diagnosis by medical personnel- never officially confirmed (covid/ backlogs) but it makes so much sense with how he is) (hmmm - is 18 today, so technically no longer a child!!) so texture and taste are key - and Doritos provide both for him (chicken - in any form - is not acceptable from a texture and somewhat lack of taste. Haddock is v good, cod is good. Burgers (decent ones) good. Steak not so much) (this is now a much improved position - at one point the only protein he would eat was cheese (and a certain brand - he could taste the difference) - he veered from very skinny (food wasn't good so only ate minimally to stop hunger) to rather chubby (discovered some foods he'd eat which weren't the best) to now a well proportioned slim young man with a rather limited (but improved) dietย

My nephew would only eat egg whites and pickled onions for years. He is at least 6 inches taller than any of his three (male) older siblings and remains slim, but his diet is better. His older brother came out to us for his 18th birthday celebration at Oktoberfest when we were in Munich and only wanted MacDonalds. We told him there wasn't one and it was eat what I cooked or starved. It was an epiphany for him and he became much more adventurous after that, influencing the next two brothers, but less so the youngestยSave ยฃ12k in 2025 #2 I am at ยฃ4863.32 out of ยฃ6000 after May (81.05%)

DS2's bday meal out was slightly disappointing last night. Local good pub with large restaurant space (that did haddock and chips for him) - we were shown to our table fine and left alone for about 10 mins before someone came for a drinks order (no drinks menu, but it *is* a pub, so we could order easy things off the top of our head) - and then no sign of the drinks for about another 20 minutes - and the order was wrong when it came. When they took our food order (just before they brought the drinks- I think that's what prompted them to bring them!) they told us about 10 things on the mains menu weren't available - first we'd heard of it - thankfully haddock wasn't one of them! It did mean that 4 of us had to rethink choices though. They then came out to say that they didn't have enough of ds3's meal for a full portion.... (we'd checked this was OK when ordering, as there was literally 1 thing on the evening menu he liked) we ended up topping it up with garlic bread. It wasn't busy- and some people left when they found out the lack of choices ( no one appeared to be being told this when seated with menus - instead they were told it when ordering)
Food arrived in 3 lots of 2 - fair enough - but with massive gaps in between - it was as if they plated 2 and brought them out, finished and plated the next 2 and brought them, then finished and plated the final 2. I could have easily finished my main before the final 2 came out - and then my side order came out last of all. Unusually, no one checked if the food was OK (it was ok - and nothing more) our waitress disappeared part way through the evening to the other end of the restaurant and we had the person who had been doing the welcoming instead. It wasn't busy and staff were talking - but looking stressed.
We were left for ages before clearing plates- and then left again before checking if we wanted desserts (were never asked about any more drinks at any point - and it was really hard to get their attention) the dessert menu guven to uswas festive inspired- but they weren't doing the festive twists, only the usual versions of the items (why still have the festive menus?!) and then my creme brulee came too cold and with a solitary small lotus biscoff instead of the 'handmade buttery shortbread' advertised.ย
Nothing *big* was wrong - it was all lots of little niggles that by themselves were nothing, but added up to make the experience disappointing (such as having a tiny coffee cup with my pot of tea) I said this to the staff member when we finally got the bill, not to get a reduction, just to make the point that things could have been done better. She said she'd speak to the manager about it and disappeared. The manager came and stood behind us, looking at us (very strange!) and then clearly was talking to staff about us - daughter was watching. After about another 20 minutes(!!) he came over to talk to us and we repeated it all and he disappeared saying he'd remove some things - we just wanted to go at this point. He came back with a reduced bill (a main and dessert were removed) and then we had to wait again before someone came to take the payment.
Unsurprisingly, we did not tip!! They hadn't had stock issues due to weather (I asked) - but it was down to 'Xmas and NY and January is always a bit strange'.... and they can't just get things from tesco 'because of allergies' (hmmm - steak is steak.....) and the staff were all fine and not stressed (apparently)
DS2 enjoyed his food, though - and had a legal alcoholic drink (he didn't like it - so it went to DS1 and DS2 ended up with p3ps1). Plus we paid for the vast majority of it with a voucher from tcb, so free money. After the reductions it only cost ยฃ27 of real money ๐I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soulRepaid mtge early (orig 11/25) 01/09 ยฃ124616 01/11 ยฃ89873 01/13 ยฃ52546 01/15 ยฃ12133 07/15 ยฃNILNet sales 2024: ยฃ208 -
It's always disappointing when a special meal turns into a meh kind of a time. I remember my 21st where all if the food was burnt and late. It turned into a bonding experience to be honest!6
