PollyWollyDoodle said:I could easily see how you could spend £38,000 – if you’ve ever been to a wedding fair and seen some of the things on offer, it wouldn’t take long. It just seems ridiculous to me that (mostly) young people are spending this sort of amount when that would actually be a decent deposit on a house in some parts of the country. Doesn’t matter how much you spend, it won’t make the marriage any better or worse!
A friend's daughter married reasonably sensibly last year, mid-pandemic - oh, that *was* at a Registrars', because it was the only option legally allowed, with only two witnesses... but the figures I was talking about were 2019, so not as a bounceback effect of lockdown...
Anyway, they had a quiet wedding, but friends of theirs had a less locked-down wedding (I think friend's daughter was in Wales, tighter restrictions at the time) and then to their horror when the new-married friends applied for a mortgage they were turned down because of the ten thousand quid of debt from the wedding. It just hadn't occurred to them that spending ten grand they didn't have in order to have their "dream wedding" (is it "their" dream wedding or hers, I always wonder?) meant they are stuck renting for years until they pay it off...2025 remaining: 37 coupons from 66:

Our wedding felt like a lot of money to me (£2K) in 2008 but according to a friend, that's less than she paid for her dress (oh the humanity I wailed! ]Wealth is not measured by currency5

Coupon Question
What would a handbag strap come under?
I purchased one for a bag I am attempting to crochetand not entirely sure where that sits coupon wise

pa: I am out shopping with a friend or I could rant for hours a) about wedding costs and b) about this summer’s fashions. Nothing suitable for the office in M&S"Be the type of woman that when you get out of bed in the morning, the devil says 'Oh crap. She's up.'
It ain’t what you do, it’s the way that you do it - that’s what gets results!

I was debating treating it as braces which was coupon free I think from the photo (although I cant see it that well so could be wrong) or considering it as equal amounts of leather to a purse and charging myself 2 coupons....Wealth is not measured by currency4 -
I think it would count as ‘haberdashery’ which is free?Edited to add: tapes, braids, laces … and braces, elastic and garters, all could be bought without coupons so I think it would come within that.Life is mainly froth and bubble: two things stand like stone. Kindness in another’s trouble, courage in your own.6

maryb - are you sure it wasn't shrapnel damage on the clothes and you need to replace them?
My theory from what I have observed is the more expensive the wedding, the shorter the marriage lasts.

Our wedding was under $10k, I believe, 10 years ago, if you don't include the other people for whom my mother paid for the airfare & rooms. However...the main reason we didn't elope was because of the parentals, so they actually covered practically everything.2023 Fashion on the Ration: Start with 66. Nightdress - 6 = 60 remaining.4

Oh, and many congratulations to Mr. & Mrs. Elsewhere.
I'll have some fresh-baked bread with some good butter here in a few hours if anybody wants to hang around a bit...2023 Fashion on the Ration: Start with 66. Nightdress - 6 = 60 remaining.6 -
maryb said:Aaargh! The moths got at ALL the summer clothes I had carefully packed away - or so I thought. Everything has at least one hole. I don’t think much if anything is salvageable because it was already several seasons old and beginning to look a little shabby. I don’t really like summer clothes as much as winter styles so haven’t been tempted to buy new each year. But now I’ve had to buy two new pairs of linen trousers and six tee shirts as a basic wardrobe replacement which I work out comes to 44 coupons. I’ll need a couple of cardigans/jumpers as well so I’ve blown my allocation for the year already. I’ll read along and cheer you all on but for myself I’m having to bow out of the challengeI think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)
The sun's been out and I think I’m solar powered (Onebrokelady)
